COLUMBIA, Mo. – Missouri S&T got finishes among the top 10 from
Aljaz Kerc (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Bezigrad),
Ethan Goldfarb (Arlington, Texas/The Oakridge School) and
Jon Glaser (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) in their respective events and a pair of top-six showings from its relay teams Friday, highlighting the season opening performances for the Miners at the Show-Me Showdown at the University of Missouri.
Friday's meet featured the collegiate programs from throughout the state, including host Missouri, Missouri State, Lindenwood and defending NCAA Division II national champion Drury. Missouri S&T finished fifth in the team standings behind the four aforementioned teams in that order.
Kerc, one of three returning Miners who competed at last year's NCAA Division II Championships, had a pair of finishes among the top five in his individual events, placing fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.52 seconds and later finishing fifth in the 100-freestyle with a time of 47.69 seconds.
Goldfarb, another of the returning national participants, also had a pair of top 10 efforts Friday, starting in the 200-yard individual medley where he had a strong second half showing to finish sixth overall in a time of 1:54.19. Goldfarb also took eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 58.11.
The third top 10 finisher was Glaser, a freshman who posted a time of 4:44.67 to take ninth place in the 500-yard freestyle.
In addition, the Miners got a fifth place showing from its 400-yard freestyle relay team that consisted of Glaser,
Keith Sponsler (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East), Kerc and
Luke Norris (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), finishing with a time of 3:09.58. Earlier in the evening, S&T's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Kerc, Sponsler, Glaser and
Luke Norris (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) finished sixth in a time of 1:26.18.
The Miners also had two others finishers among the top 12 in the 200-IM in
Colton Krause (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville), who was 11
th in 1:57.72 and
Ryan Layne (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek), who finished right behind Krause in the same heat in 1:57.79.
Krause also finished 12
th in the 100-yard butterfly with a mark of 52.22 seconds,
Alfredo Martinez (Mexico City, Mexico/Instituto Cumbres San Javier) was 14
th in the 500-freestyle in 4:53.96 and Sponsler was 15
th in the 100-freestyle with a time of 48.44 seconds, one spot ahead of Norris' time of 48.64 seconds. Nesrala had a 15
th place showing in the 100-backstroke in 55.26 seconds.
In the 200-yard medley relay, the Miners' team of Nesrala, Goldfarb, Krause and Martinez finished 11
th with a time of 1:37.73.
The next competition for the Miners will take place on Oct. 18 and 19, when the Miners compete at Lewis University in a pair of dual meets in Romeoville, Ill.
