Box Score (Quincy, Ill.) – Four times this season the Missouri S&T volleyball squad has played a five set match and has come out victorious all four times. The latest being on Saturday when the Miners held a 2-1 lead only to watch Quincy come back and force a fifth set. S&T took the finale to win
3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 9-25, 15-11) and improved to 11-9, 7-4 GLVC.
The opening set featured six ties and two lead changes and was a back and forth affair. The Miners held a pair of four point leads only to watch the Hawks 6-14, 2-9 GLVC storm back with a 10-2 run to take a 20-16 lead on a service ace by Emily Lindemulder. S&T worked its way back thanks to a 6-2 run of its own to tie it at 22-all on a double block by
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) and
Holly Tarvin (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs). Quincy would be the first to reach 25 taking advantage of two errors by the Miners to win the opening set.
S&T stormed out of the gates in the second set to take a 9-4 lead before the Hawks closed to within 11-9. The Miners stretched their lead back out to five and didn't look back on their way to evening the set with a 25-21 win.
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) hit .600 in the set while
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) hit. 429. As a team S&T finished the set with 17 kills and had an attack percentage of .368.
In the third set the Miners were never headed racing out to an early 6-2 lead. Quincy came back to tie it at 15-all, but S&T pulled away with a 6-1 run to take the stanza by a 25-18 margin. Offense again was the story in the frame as the Miners hit .324 and nine of their 14 kills came from the duo of Moon and Wright.
The fourth set was all Hawks. It was tied at 4 before Quincy scored 13 straight taking advantage of eight S&T errors during the run to win 25-9.
The Hawks carried that momentum over from set four into the finale racing out to a 3-1 lead. The Miners settled down scoring four of the next five points to take a 5-4 lead. Quincy tied it on an error by
Shelby Wagner (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit), but an error by Lindemulder on the next swing gave the lead back to S&T.
The Miners scored the next three to push ahead 8-5 at the changeover, but the Hawks scored four of the next five points to level it at 9-9. A service error by Lindemulder gave S&T the lead back and it wouldn't relinquish it pushing the lead to 14-10 on a double block by Wagner and Moon. Wright ended the match with her match-high 15
th kill.
Joining Wright in double figures were Haslag with 11 kills while Moon contributed 10 to the attack.
Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) dished out 43 assists while
Caitlin Brocker (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central ) finished with 25 digs. The Miners finished with an attack percentage of .157 (53k/28e/159ta).
Carly Schmitt and Gianna Lincoln had 14 kills apiece to lead Quincy while Samantha Haegele dropped in 10. Courtney O'Brien had 26 assists while Sommer Holder had 22 digs. The Hawks finished the match hitting .170 (57k/29e/165ta).
S&T is back at home on Tuesday night hosting Lindenwood in a non-conference match beginning at 6 p.m.
