Miners' Strong Blocking Performance Not Enough in Loss to Cardinals

LIBERTY, Mo.  —  Missouri S&T women's volleyball dropped a four-set match to William Jewell on Friday, falling 25-22, 24-26, 25-20, 25-13.

The Miners kept the opening set competitive, using strong play at the net to stay within striking distance. Madison Smith (Boonville, MO/Boonville) and Kate Zipprich (Hardin, IL/Calhoun) teamed with Danielle Wilke (Palmer Lake, CO/Palmer Ridge) on blocks early in the set, while Missouri S&T continued to find points through its attack. They took a five-point lead at 14-9 after scoring eight points in a row, but William Jewell closed strong by taking eight of the last ten points to take the opening set.

Missouri S&T responded in the second set. After trading points throughout a tightly contested frame, the Miners faced a 20-19 deficit before responding to take a 22-20 lead. The Cardinals regained the lead at 24-23, but Avery Patton (Lathrop, MO/Truman) delivered consecutive kills along with another kill by Selin Ozdemir (Ankara, Turkey/Bilim) to give S&T the frame 26-24.

The Miners fell behind early in the third set but worked their way back, tying the score at 7-7 behind kills from Wilke, Patton and Addie Schoenberger (Menomonee Falls, WI/Sussex Hamilton). Missouri S&T continued to produce offensively, recording a match-high 15 kills in the set, but William Jewell gradually created separation taking the set at 25-20 after a 6-2 run.

The Cardinals carried that momentum into the fourth set, using a six-point run to build an 8-3 advantage after the teams traded points early. Patton and Schoenberger both contributed kills down the stretch, but William Jewell maintained its lead to close out the match.

Mining the Numbers

  • The Miners' six blocks in set one tied a season-high for the team, matching their performance in set against Southeastern Oklahoma on August 29.
  • Ozdemir tied a career-best on Friday night, recording four blocks in the match.
  • Zipprich had a productive night, hitting .438 on sixteen attempts while adding eight kills and four blocks.
