KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri S&T volleyball continues to excel at the net, recording its best blocking performance of the season Saturday. The Miners came up short against Rockhurst though, falling in three sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-19) in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Mason-Halpin Field House.
The Miners kept the opening set close, trading points and early runs and getting four blocks from Addie Schoenberger (Menomonee Falls, WI/Sussex Hamilton). After narrowly falling behind, the Miners pulled even at 18-18 on a kill by Danielle Wilke (Palmer Lake, CO/Palmer Ridge) before Rockhurst closed with a 7-2 run to take the set 25-20.
In the second set, S&T overcame a three-point deficit with a 6-1 run that featured two aces by Maggie Miller (Gretna, NE/Gretna) and a pair of kills from Selin Ozdemir (Ankara, Turkey/Bilim). Rockhurst rebuilt a slight lead, but the Miners kept them close with blocks by Schoenberger, Kate Zipprich (Hardin, IL/Calhoun), and Grae Hunter (Oconomowoc, WI/Oconomowoc). The Hawks ended the second set much like the first, closing on a 6-2 run to go up two sets to none.
Missouri S&T opened the third set looking to extend the match, recovering from an early deficit to take the lead at 9-8 after a four-point run that featured an ace and a kill by Hunter. Rockhurst responded with a run to rebuild their lead, but kills by Ozdemir, Wilke, and Madison Smith (Boonville, MO/Boonville) kept the Miners in it. The Hawks thrived on another late run, going up 20-14 and holding that advangtage to seal the match with a 25-19 score in the third frame.
