Box Score (St. Louis, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were held to a season-low 39 points and shot only 31 percent from the floor in a
56-39 loss at Maryville on Saturday. S&T remains in a first place tie in the GLVC's West Division as Quincy lost at home to William Jewell 79-55.
The two sides traded baskets to open the game and then the Saints (10-7, 6-3 GLVC) ran off 11 straight points to take a 13-2 lead. It would be a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Lady Miners (11-6, 7-2 GLVC) had a difficult time handling the ball against the Maryville defense as they turned it over 10 times in the first 10 minutes of the contest.
S&T trailed 20-7 with 9:37 left in the half, but the cut the deficit to seven points on a back-to-back three's from
Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) and
Erica Askew (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park). The Saints though ended the first half on a 10-4 run and went into the locker room leading 30-17.
The Lady Miners shot only 23 percent (6 for 26) from the field and was 3 of 12 from three. Knar led the way with six points while
Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan),
Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) and Askew added three points apiece.
Maryville shot 38 percent (12 for 32) from the floor and was led in scoring by Abby Duethman with 12 points.
S&T opened the second half on fire scoring the first 10 points to cut the Saint lead to 30-27 on a jumper by
Taylor Jensen (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) with 16:20 left in the contest. After a timeout, the Saints countered with a 14-3 surge to push its lead back to double digits on a pair of three's by Duethman and Shelby Miller with nine minutes to play.
Knar answered with a three to cut the lead back to 11 points at 44-33, but wouldn't get any closer as Maryville countered by scoring nine of the next 11 points to take its largest lead of the afternoon at 53-35 with under four minutes to play.
S&T shot a little better in the second half making 39 percent of its shots to finish the game at 31 percent. It was 5 of 17 from three and 4 for 9 at the foul line. Knar was the lone player in double figures with 12 points while Parks pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds. The Lady Miners finished the game with 21 turnovers.
The Saints shot 40 percent (22 of 55) from the field and was led in scoring by Duethman with 17, Miller added 11 and Erica Lorton dropped home 10 points. Maryville scored 23 points of those 21 turnovers and outscored S&T 30-10 in the paint.
The Lady Miners are back in action next Thursday when they head to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst at 5:15 p.m.
