Missouri S&T will host the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in a twinbill Thursday, beginning with the women's contest at 5:30 p.m. and the men's game to follow at 7:30 p.m. Lewis University will be the opponent for S&T on Saturday, starting with the women's contest at 1 p.m. and the men's game at 3 p.m.
Women's game: Thursday vs. Wisconsin-Parkside
The Lady Miners are looking to bounce back from a 78-61 loss Monday to Millersville, a day after S&T defeated Alabama-Huntsville in its first game after the holiday break. A rough stretch in the first half was costly to the Lady Miners on Monday, as they were led by
Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) with 15 points and
Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) with 14.
Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan), the leading scorer for the Lady Miners this season with an average of 15.3 points per game, had 22 points in the 79-76 win over Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday. She is seventh in the GLVC in scoring, 10
th in rebounding with a team-best 8.1 boards per game and third in field goal percentage at 56.3 percent.
Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) is also scoring in double figures at 10.4 points per game and is fifth in the conference with 2.4 three-pointers per game.
The Lady Miners are 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the GLVC after their win over Drury in Springfield, Mo., last month.
UW-Parkside, which has played in the NCAA Midwest Regional championship game in each of the last two seasons, brings a 6-2 record into its conference opener Thursday. The Rangers, whose losses have come at the hands of Michigan Tech and current No. 15 Grand Canyon, picked up a big win prior to the holiday break by beating No. 6 Washburn in Las Vegas.
The Rangers' balanced scoring effort is headed by Jenna Endisch, who is averaging 13.5 points per outing and is among the GLVC leaders in three-point baskets with 20. UW-Parkside is holding its opponents to just 53.5 points per game, the second-lowest figure in the league.
Men's game: Thursday vs. Wisconsin-Parkside
Missouri S&T opened up its post-holiday break schedule by routing Benedictine-Springfield 89-61 Monday and is seeking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season as it resumes its GLVC slate Thursday night.
Michael Jackson (Wichita, Kan./Wichita East) scored a season-high 17 points lead a five-player contingent in double figures in that victory, while Mudi Eruteya had his second double-double of the year with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Eruteya leads the Miners in scoring with an average of 13.6 points per game and ranks third in the conference with his team-high 8.1 rebounds per contest.
Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East) and
Michael Nesbitt (Evansville, Ind./LaLumiere School), both of whom reached double figures on Monday along with
Julian Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School), are averaging 9.5 and nine points per game, respectively.
The Miners bring a record of 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the GLVC into Thursday's game.
Wisconsin-Parkside is 5-3 on the season as it begins conference play and possesses the GLVC's leading scorer, forward Jeremy Saffold, who is scoring 20.6 points per game. Saffold has scored in double figures in all eight of the Ranger contests this season, with a high of 34 in a win over Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras in late November that is the high mark for a GLVC player this season.
Forward Zygimantas Riauka is averaging 14.1 points per game and is among the GLVC leaders in field goal percentage at 59.2 percent, while also leading the Rangers on the boards with 6.8 per game.
Saturday's opponent: Lewis
Lewis' women's team is off to a 7-1 start heading into its game Thursday at Drury, the best start for the Flyers since the 1997-98 season. A big key to the Flyers' early success has come from their perimeter shooters, as they are second in the GLVC in three-point percentage at 39.1 percent and have made 6.5 three-pointers per game, the third-best average in the league.
Jess Reinhart leads the Flyers in scoring with an average of 15.9 points per game, which is tied for fourth in the GLVC, while Labrenthia Murdock is scoring just over 10 points a game and is connecting on 48.3 percent of her three-point attempts. Murdock, Nikki Nellen and Alexus Grayer have combined to make 42 of Lewis' 52 three-point baskets on the season.
On the men's side, Lewis is 6-2 and had won five consecutive games heading into its game Thursday at No. 14 Drury. The Flyers, who made the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional a year ago, are led in scoring by last year's GLVC “Freshman of the Year” Ryan Jackson, who is averaging 17.4 points per game, a mark good for fifth in the league. Guards Jeff Jarosz and David Bryant are also scoring in double figures, with Jarosz at 11.8 points a game and Bryant at 10.5, including a team-high 16 three-point baskets.
Lewis possesses the GLVC's top-ranked scoring defense, as it is giving up just 57.4 points a game and is holding its foes to just 38 percent shooting from the floor.
