Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners closed out the first half of the season with a convincing
70-47 win over Lindenwood on Wednesday evening at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. S&T (4-3) used a pair of long runs in each half to take control of the contest.
The Lady Miners scored 11 of the first 13 points in the game and wouldn't trail at any time to pick up their third straight win. Lindenwood (2-7) scored seven straight points to cut the S&T lead to 11-9 by the midway point of the opening stanza.
Erica Askew (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) came off the bench and provided a spark hitting a three to push the lead back out to five points. After the Lions cut the lead to 15-12 on a jumper by Julia Hlinak, the Lady Miners went on a 21-6 run to and had its biggest lead of the half at 36-18 on a three by
Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) with 0:27 left.
Kyesha Hall (Dodson, La./) and Knar combined for 13 of those points.
Dajae Williams (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) hit a layup right before the buzzer to send S&T into the intermission up 38-20.
The Lady Miners got off to slow start shooting the ball, but heated up over the last 10 minutes to finish the half shooting 45.5 percent (15-for-33). They were 5-of-12 from three and 3-for-4 at the foul line. Hall led all scorers with 11 points and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor. S&T was outrebounded 20-to-18 in the frame.
Lindenwood made just 9 of its 30 attempts (30 percent) and was 0-for-3 from downtown. Cassie Bluemner and Sarah Schnieders combined for 11 points. Bluemner also had five rebounds.
The Lady Miners quickly pushed their lead over 20 as
Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) opened the second half with an old-fashioned three-point play. Meagan Hittle hit a layup on the ensuing possession and that would be the last time the margin was less than 20 points. S&T put the game away with a 14-0 run spanning four minutes as it took its largest lead of the night at 62-27 with less than 12 minutes to play. Knar started the run with back-to-back three's while
Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) added six points as well.
The Lady Miners struggled to score over the final 12 minutes as they were held to just eight points, but their defense continued to give the Lion attack fits as they wouldn't get closer than 22 points the rest of the way.
S&T's defense forced 26 turnovers and turned that into 23 points. The bench also did its job scoring 41 points. The Lady Miners finished the game shooting 44 percent (26-for-59) and were 7-of-17 from behind the three-point line. Parks led three players in double figures with 13 points while Knar dropped in 12 and Hall had 11.
S&T outrebounded the Lions 24-15 in the second half and finished the game with a 42-35 edge on the glass.
Lindenwood finished the game shooting 32 percent (18-for-57) from the field and made just 2 of its 11 three-point attempts. Jordynn Martin was the lone Lion in double figures with 10 points. Bluemner and Schneiders finished with nine points apiece.
The Lady Miners will be off until Sunday, Dec. 30, when they travel to Louisville, Ky., to take on Alabama-Huntsville in the Metro Medical New Year's Classic beginning at 3 p.m. (CT).
