INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team completed the hat trick Friday night.
For the third time this season, the Miners took down a nationally ranked team – and ended a four-game winless streak in the process – by beating No. 19-ranked and Great Lakes Valley Conference leader Indianapolis
2-0 on the Greyhounds' home field.
During the four-game stretch which began right after the Miners knocked off top-ranked Northern Kentucky on Sept. 25, S&T had not even scored a goal. That continued through the first half Friday as the teams were scoreless at the intermission, but one breakaway broke the ice for the Miners.
Junior defender
Spencer Brinkmeyer (Kansas City, Mo./Oak Park) sprung
Jervis Atagana (Columbia, Mo./Hickman ) on a breakaway and he put a shot past UIndy goalkeeper Andrew Verhonik at the 59:12 mark to put S&T in front.
Following Atagana's goal, the Greyhounds controlled play for the next several minutes and got a number of shots in the direction of S&T goalkeeper
Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West). Three of those opportunities came on corner kicks and all of them were turned away by the Miner defense, including a head ball effort by Bobby Adkins with just under five minutes to play.
In the final minute, UIndy was whistled for a yellow card and then a foul in the penalty area with 35 seconds to go, granting a penalty kick opportunity to the Miners that was converted by
Ryan Muich (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) to extend the lead.
Jackson, making his second start of the season in goal, made five saves to earn the shutout. The Greyhounds (10-3, 9-2 GLVC) outshot the Miners 19-8 for the game and had 11 corner kicks – nine in the second half – to the Miners' four.
S&T, who improved to 8-4-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the GLVC, will play its final road game in conference play Sunday when it takes on Saint Joseph's in a 2:30 p.m. game in Rensselaer, Ind.
