Miners shut down Rockhurst to remain undefeated for season

9/17/2010 11:26:13 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Entering Friday's matchup, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team had not defeated Rockhurst in the last nine meetings between the teams. But on this night, the Miners took out a lot of that frustration on the Hawks in the final 45 minutes of the game as they took a 3-0 victory in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at the S&T Soccer Field.
The Miners had not beaten the Hawks since 2001 and had lost at least once to Rockhurst every year since. But on this night, it was a three-goal outburst after the intermission combined with a solid defensive effort that gave S&T just its second win ever over the Hawks.
After a scoreless first half, one in which the Hawks outshot the Miners 7-5, it was S&T that struck first just under eight minutes into the second half. Spencer Brinkmeyer (Kansas City, Mo./Oak Park) got around a Rockhurst defender on the end line and put a feed in front of the net that Sam Shaffer (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) buried to put the Miners in front.
S&T extended its lead at the 76:56 mark when Jervis Atagana (Columbia, Mo./Hickman ) got a pass from Trent Doerner (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) and put a shot from the top of the box inside the post. Brian Seawright (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) provided the Miners their third goal of the night when he hit a point blank shot by Hawk goalkeeper Kyle Clawson at the 82:04 mark with an assist from David Kekec (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue).
The Miners outshot the Hawks 12-6 in the second half and finished with a 17-13 advantage in that department. Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) recorded his 14th career shutout by making five saves in the nets for S&T, who remained undefeated on the season at 2-0-2 with the victory.
Rockhurst (3-1, 2-1 GLVC) had allowed just one goal in its three victories heading into Friday's game.
The Miners will host Quincy, a 7-2 winner over Maryville Friday, at noon Sunday at the S&T Soccer Field.
