Miners complete sweep of Maryville to reach 5-1 in GLVC play

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team improved to 5-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday by sweeping league newcomer Maryville University by scores of 13-5 and 10-2 at the S&T Baseball Field.

The Miners got on the scoreboard in the opening inning of game one due to an error, as Hunter Scheib (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored when the throw to third went into left field.

After the Saints tied the score in the third, a similar play took place in the bottom of the inning to put S&T back in front. Scheib bunted his way on, moved to second on a walk, then stole third and scored when the throw again went into left.

S&T didn't stop there, as another error allowed Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) to cross the plate, then Matt Kempin (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy) singled to score Ben Pieper (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) after he stole second. A sacrifice fly by Sam Adams (Forsyth, Mo./Forsyth) scored the fourth run of the inning.

The Miners added two runs in the fourth and tacked on four more runs in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh.

Andrew Page (Stoney Creek, Ont./Cardinal Newman) pitched the first seven innings for S&T to get the win, scattering seven hits and striking out five. Matt Kempin (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy) had four hits to lead the Miners' 13-hit attack in game one, while Scheib, Zach Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon) and Adams all had two hits apiece.

In the second game, the Miners scored twice in the opening inning and never trailed after that. Morrison tripled into the left field corner with two outs, then scored when the relay throw on the play was wild. Pieper was hit by a pitch, then stole second and scored on a single by Kempin.

The Saints cut the lead in half with a run in the third, but Morrison led off the bottom half of the frame with a home run to right center to get the lead back to two. Maryville trimmed the lead to one again with a run in the fifth, but the Miners took advantage of a two-out error to score five unearned runs in latter half of the frame.

Zach Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon) and Adams doubled with one out to put runners at second and third, then both runners scored when Maryville shortstop Jared Mills threw wild to first on a two-out ground ball off the bat of Drew Davenport (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West).

Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower) followed with a single to bring home Davenport – who had moved ahead on a balk – which was followed later in the inning by RBI singles by Morrison and Pieper to give the Miners an 8-2 lead.

S&T scored two more unearned runs in the sixth before the game was called due to darkness.

Morrison had three-fourths of the cycle in going three-for-four in the game, while Cogan and Kempin had two hits each. S&T finished with 12 hits in the nightcap.

Chris Bowe (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) pitched all six innings to get his second win of the season, giving up six hits along the way.

The Miners (8-14) and Saints are scheduled to play the second doubleheader of the series Sunday at noon.
