Miners pitch another shutout in 4-0 rout over Kentucky Wesleyan

10/8/2010 11:46:45 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team continued its defensive dominance on Fridays in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, as it held Kentucky Wesleyan without a shot for the entire game to record its fourth straight shutout in a 4-0 win at the S&T Soccer Field.
The Miners were able to set a pair of school records as a result of the shutout Friday evening, as they blanked a fourth straight opponent for the first time in the history of the program and extended their shutout streak to a new record mark of 388:31. It also kept the Miners' mark of not allowing a goal in a Friday game in GLVC play intact, as they have outscored four league foes by an 11-0 margin in posting a 3-0-1 mark on the opening night of the weekend.
S&T needed nearly 21 minutes to get on the scoreboard Friday, as Sam Shaffer (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) drilled in a shot from the top of the box off a pass from J.J. Bilyeu (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) to put the Miners on top. A little over eight minutes later, Ryan Muich (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) sent Trent Doerner (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) off on a breakaway and the junior midfielder hit the back of the net to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Miners added a third goal before halftime when Oscar Alvarez (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Ciudad de Mexico) one-timed a pass from Kenny Gravlin (Florissant, Mo./St. Louis University HS) to score his first goal of the season.
S&T's final goal of the night came with just over 17 minutes remaining in the game as Peter Vaccaro (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) headed in Kyle Schraier (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College )'s corner kick.
The Miners finished the evening with 34 shots, while Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) and Donny Gesell (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) split the duties in goal for S&T to get the combined shutout.
Missouri S&T, now 6-2-2 overall and in second place with a 6-1-2 mark in GLVC play, returns to the home pitch Sunday to face Southern Indiana in a 2:30 p.m. contest. The Miners moved into second in the standings behind Lewis – a 3-2 winner Friday at Wisconsin-Parkside – after Northern Kentucky played to a tie at Rockhurst and Quincy lost in overtime to Indianapolis on a goal in the final minute of play.
