LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team came away from its final regular season road game in Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a scoreless tie Sunday at Bellarmine, keeping itself in a position to land a home game in the conference tournament with two games remaining on its league slate.
The Miners, 7-2-3 in GLVC play and 7-3-3 overall, finished Sunday in third place in the league standings with home games against Saint Joseph's and Indianapolis still left on the schedule. S&T will host Saint Joseph's Friday at 5 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field and can clinch a home game in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament with a victory over the Pumas.
Lewis and Northern Kentucky, the two teams ahead of Missouri S&T, have already clinched berths to the conference tournament.
In Sunday's game, the Miners were outshot by a 20-9 margin by the Knights, but only eight of the Bellarmine shots made it on goal. Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) recorded his 17th career shutout by making seven saves including three in the overtime periods; the Miner defense also recorded a save as well.
The closest calls to goals came 16 minutes into the second half. Bellarmine's Nathan Driggers hit the crossbar with a shot, then moments later S&T's Spencer Brinkmeyer (Kansas City, Mo./Oak Park) had an opportunity that was cleared away by a Knight defender.
Brinkmeyer, Sam Shaffer (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) and Ryan Muich (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) all had two shots apiece to lead the Miners. Sunday's shutout was the sixth in the last seven games for the Miners and school record-tying eighth recorded by the team this season.
