ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Missouri S&T men's soccer dropped a 2-1 decision to Maryville Saturday, with the Saints scoring on a penalty kick with 1:04 remaining to hand the Miners a road loss.
Missouri S&T (6-3-0, 4-3-0 GLVC) took an early lead when
Mike Banasik (Hjoerring, Denmark/Hjoering Gymnasium) found the back of the net in the 10th minute. The Miners carried the 1-0 advantage into the closing minutes of the opening half before Maryville's Lukas Molander scored in the 44th minute to send the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.
Maryville was reduced to 10 players early in the second half when Molander received a red card at the 45:40 mark.
The Miners continued to pressure the Saints but were unable to regain the lead. Missouri S&T recorded seven shots in the second half and finished with an 11-10 advantage in shots for the match.
Maryville earned a penalty kick in the 89th minute, and Julian Stoecker converted the opportunity to give the Saints a 2-1 lead.
S&T had one final push in the closing seconds, with
Luke Giesing (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) recording two shots in the final minute, but the Miners were unable to find the equalizer.
Cavitt Bruhn (Plano, TX/Plano) made two saves in goal for Missouri S&T, while Maryville goalkeeper Asgrimur Vidisson stopped four shots.
What's Next
The Miners will return to action next Wednesday to host Drury University. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
