(Rolla, Mo.) – It wasn't pretty but the Missouri S&T Lady Miners were able to sweep their past Saint Joseph's,
3-0 (25-23, 25-20 and 25-18) in a Great Lake Valley Conference match-up on Friday evening in Rolla.
S&T (6-13, 2-1 GLVC) held the Pumas (6-10, 1-2 GLVC) to just .009 hitting percentage (23kills/22errors/107 total attacks) for the evening. After a slow start offensively the Lady Miners picked it up hitting .161 in the final two sets and recorded 30 kills on the night to finish at .116 percent.
Saint Joseph's led for most of the first set building its lead to 18-11 at one point before S&T closed to within a pair at 19-17. The Pumas responded with three straight points regaining a five point advantage, but the Lady Miners ran off six of the next seven points to take its first lead of the match since the early going at 23-22. An attack error by Julie Meyer tied things back up at 23, however S&T was able to take advantage of a SJC service error and an attack error to close out the frame.
The Pumas hit .000 in the opening stanza (9k/9e/40ta) while the Lady Miners were slightly better with 11 kills against 10 errors in 33 chances for a hitting percentage of .030.
S&T got off to fast start in the second set by scoring six of the first eight points before Saint Joseph's rallied back with six straight to regain the lead. It was able to take a 14-11 lead on three straight points before the Lady Miners came back to tie things up at 14 all. The Pumas regained a 17-15 advantage before a 5-0 run by S&T gave it the lead for good at 20-17. The Lady Miners were able to close out the frame by scoring five of the final eight points to take a commanding two sets to none lead.
The third frame was a back and forth affair early on as there were five ties and two lead changes early in the set. With the score tied at 10, S&T began to make its push going on a 7-1 surge building its largest lead of the night at 17-11. The Pumas were able to get within three on a couple of different occasions but the Lady Miners were able to finish strong getting three kills from Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled) down the stretch, including the last two, to ease home with the victory and improve to 4-0 at the Bullman this season.
Meyer finished with a game-high 13 kills while Danielle Kracl (Omaha, Neb./Burke) narrowly missed a double-double with 20 set assists and nine digs. Bridget Williams (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) finished with 15 digs on the evening.
S&T concludes its brief three game home stand with a GLVC match-up against the 12th ranked Indianapolis Greyhounds on Saturday afternoon at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building beginning at 3 p.m.
