A pair of Missouri S&T student-athletes who have enjoyed standout careers in Miner uniforms are the recipients of the 2009 Gale Bullman Awards, which were announced Thursday night at the M-Club Awards Banquet held at Havener Center.

Jordan Henry (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North)
(St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North), an All-America performer and Great Lakes Valley Conference champion in track and field, was named as the winner of the men's Bullman Award for the 2008-09 season, while Tamara McCaskill (Edwardsville, Ill.), the all-time leading scorer in the history of the women's basketball program and a top performer in women's track and field, was the women's Bullman Award winner.

The Bullman Award, named for the university's former director of athletics and football coach, is the most prestigious award given to a Missouri S&T student-athlete. It is traditionally given to a senior athlete who has displayed outstanding character and excelled both on the playing field and in the classroom.

Henry was the national runner-up in the pole vault for the second straight year at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships and was named as the men's “Athlete of the Year” for the indoor season by the GLVC. Henry won the inaugural heptathlon competition at the conference's indoor meet and finished as the runner-up in the pole vault.

During the outdoor season, Henry has already made the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Division II meet with a school record clearance of 17-0 3/4, a mark he made to win the pole vault last weekend at the GLVC Outdoor Championships in Indianapolis. The pole vault title was the fourth conference championship in that event in his career as a Miner and he will be making his sixth appearance at a national competition later this month in San Angelo, Texas.

McCaskill became the Lady Miners' all-time leading scorer during the 2008-09 season in the process of earning her fourth all-conference award in the sport during her career. As the fourth-ranked scorer in the GLVC this season — averaging 17.6 points per game — she finished her tenure at S&T with 1,525 points and also broke marks for field goals made in a season (201) and career (591).

She was a second-team All-GLVC selection this season after earning first-team honors as a junior when the Lady Miners reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division II Tournament.

In addition, McCaskill competed at the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the high jump and is a provisional qualifier for this year's meet. She finished third at last weekend's GLVC Outdoor Championships, her third straight top-three finish in the event and is a co-holder of the school record in the high jump.

Sterling Martin
, the head track and field coach at S&T, was named as the “Coach of the Year” at the banquet. Martin, in his sixth season at the helm of the program, led the men's team to GLVC championships in both the indoor and outdoor seasons which included the closest margin of victory in league history in the men's outdoor meet last week. The S&T's women's track also posted third place finishes, the top performances ever for the Lady Miners at a conference meet.

The guest speaker at the banquet, former Miner student-athlete Ron Rosner, was the recipient of the M-M Award. Rosner, who competed in track and cross country while attending the university, currently serves as the senior corporate manager of environment, safety and health at Haas TCM, Inc., in St. Louis.  Sue Melton, who handles insurance matters for the student-athletes at Missouri S&T, and assistant track and field coach Bryan Schiding, who has worked with the program for the last six years, were named as this year's honorary M-Club award recipients.
