Greyhounds take series finale from Miner baseball team

3/15/2009 5:12:02 PM

Missouri S&T's baseball team missed a chance to earn a split in its four-game weekend series Sunday with the University of Indianapolis, as the Greyhounds took a 9-2 decision in the series finale at the S&T Baseball Field.

Indianapolis took advantage of two Miner errors in the fourth inning to get ahead in the contest, then added onto the lead as it went through six S&T pitchers on the afternoon.

After three scoreless innings to start the game, the Greyhounds broke on top in the fourth. Scott Lawley's double past first got UIndy its first run of the inning, then after a groundout by Travis Kempton, Zac Carter threw back to second to try and get Lawley as he strayed too far away from second. However, the throw went into left field to allow Scott Mourey to score from third.

Moments later, Eric Rieker drew a walk and headed for second, prompting a double steal that allowed the third run to score in the inning.

The Miners had a chance to get back into the game, as Matt Grundmann (Grafton, Ill./Jersey Community) drove in Louie Joseph (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) with an infield hit with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. S&T, however, left two runners on in the fourth and two more in the fifth before UIndy broke the game open with a three-run seventh, highlighted by Ben Sondgeroth's two-run homer.

Eaf Redden (Gunter, Texas/Gunter) drove in the Miners' second run with an RBI single in the ninth.

S&T had nine hits in the game and had six additional runners by walk or hit batters, but stranded 12 in the contest. Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower) and Drew Davenport (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) each had two of the Miners' nine hits.

Jordan Buck (Pacific, Mo./Pacific) took the loss on the mound for the Miners (6-14), who will return to action Tuesday when they host Missouri Southern in a single game at 1 p.m.
