Calderon nets game-winner for Miners in final minute of 2-1 victory

10/2/2009 11:48:13 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Trent Doerner (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) and Mario Calderon (Mexico City, Mexico/ITESM) scored goals for the Missouri S&T men's soccer team Friday night, the first ending a scoreless streak for the Miners and the latter being the game-winner for S&T in the final minute of play.
Missouri S&T came from behind on the first goals of the season from Doerner and Calderon to notch a 2-1 victory over Great Lakes Valley Conference newcomer Maryville at the S&T Soccer Field.
After a first half that the Miners dominated on the stat sheet – outshooting the Saints 17-0 – but ended scoreless, Maryville took the lead 3:19 into the second half on a goal from Dustin Allison.
The Miners, who had not scored since late in their Sept. 13 win over Illinois-Springfield, had scoring chances throughout the night and finally broke through with 18:25 remaining in regulation time.
Freshman Peter Haw (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) made a move around a Maryville defender in the corner, then sent a pass across the box to a wide open Doerner, who buried a shot behind goalkeeper Michael Flately to knot the score at one.
The game remained tied over the next 18 minutes, then Miner goalkeeper Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) punted a ball downfield with just under a minute left on the clock. The ball ricocheted off a player and went to Calderon, who blasted a shot from about 25 yards out that went into the upper right-hand corner of the net to give S&T the lead with 45 seconds left.
S&T finished the game with a 24-9 advantage in shots and a 9-5 edge in corner kicks. McNamee made one save on the night as only two of the Saints' nine shots were on goal.
The Miners (3-4-1, 3-3-1 overall) will close out their homestand Sunday when they host Missouri-St. Louis in a 2:30 p.m. contest.
