The night started out as well as it possibly could for the Missouri S&T swimming team Friday -- and the end result certainly matched that.
The Miners' 400-yard medley relay team broke the pool record in the course of winning that event, then S&T went on to post a
114-91 victory over the defending NCAA Division II champions in a matchup of the top two finishers at last year's national meet.
Although the Miners came away with only five event wins Friday, they were able to parlay a large number of second- and third-place finishes into enough points to overcome the differential. In addition, the Miners got two of their wins in the relays and outscored the Panthers 26-8 in the two events.
S&T's individual wins came from
Phil Arve (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) in the 200-yard butterfly, where he edged the 2008 national runner-up, Yiwen Huang by two-tenths of a second in 1:54.94;
Kyle Gordon (Superior, Colo./Monarch) in the 100-yard freestyle, where he posted a time of 46.89 seconds; and
Jeff Enge (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Memorial) in the 200-yard backstroke where he had a time of 1:53.78.
The pool record in the 400-medley relay came from the team of Enge,
Zlatan Hamzic (Panceva, Serbia/Uros Predic),
Andrew Schranck (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) and
David Sanchez-Turner (Madrid, Spain/Academic Torvell) in a time of 3:27.60. Later in the evening, Schranck and Sanchez-Turner bookended the 400-freestyle relay group that included Gordon and
Hamilton Vernon (Omaha, Neb./Burke) to post a winning time of 3:09.33.
The Miners had second place finishes in eight of the nine individual events -- the only exception being the 200-butterfly that Arve won over Huang.
Andrew Trowbridge (Arlington, Texas/Arlington) placed second to defending national champ Mitch Snyder in the 1,000 by only 0.04 seconds and again in the 500-free in 4:41.93.
Other second place showings came from
James Larkins (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) in the 200-freestyle in 1:46.90, Schranck in the 50-freestyle in 21.81 seconds, Enge in the 200-individual medley in 1:56.79, Sanchez-Turner in the 100-free in 48.67 seconds and
Aaron Schmidt (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) in the 200-backstroke in 1:56.26.
Hamzic and
Zach Lemons (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff) tied for second in a tightly contested 200-yard breaststroke with matching 2:07.99 marks, finishing just 0.02 behind Drury's Jun Han Kim.
Third place performances were posted by Arve in the 1,000-free in 9:52.39,
Brian Howell (Norman, Okla./Norman North) in the 200-freestyle in 1:47.94, Gordon in the 50-free in 21.94 and Lemons in the 200-IM in 1:58.08 and 200-butterfly in 2:00.09.
The Miners will be idle from meet competition until Nov. 22 when they take part in the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis.
