EMPORIA, Kan. -- Missouri S&T sophomore Sydney Morris (Jefferson City, MO/Calvary Lutheran) earned her first career All-America honor on Saturday, placing 10th in the women's shot put at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships to claim Second Team All-America. Morris recorded a personal-best throw of 14.92 meters, breaking the school record for the second time this season.
Morris entered the national meet after qualifying with a then-school-record mark of 14.76 meters at the Miner Invitational and competed in the opening flight alongside qualifiers ranked 12th through 22nd nationally. She wasted little time making an impact, unleashing her best throw of the day on her opening attempt. The 14.92-meter toss immediately vaulted her to the top of the first flight and ultimately proved strong enough to keep her in contention throughout the competition.
She followed with throws of 14.33 meters and 14.34 meters, marks that also would have been good enough for a top-15 finish. After all competitors in the first flight completed their three attempts, Morris remained in first place entering the second flight featuring the nation's top-11 qualifiers.
Despite competing against some of Division II's premier throwers, Morris' opening mark continued to hold up as the event progressed. When the final standings were determined, she secured a 10th-place national finish, edging higher-seeded competitors Allysa Mahone of Missouri Southern and Rae Smart of MSU-Billings who had qualified as eighth and eleventh, respectively.
Morris' performance marks the highest finish by a member of the Missouri S&T women's track & field team at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships since 2017.
Morris was also one of five sophomores to finish among the top 10 in the event, highlighting a strong young field at the national championships. Missouri Southern's Dailynn VanDeren captured the national title with a throw of 16.93 meters, while Indianapolis' Vivian Osagie placed fourth as the only other competitor from the Great Lakes Valley Conference to earn All-America honors in the event.
