Smith Wins Co-Freshman of the Year, Seven Miners Win All-GLVC Honors

MARION, Ill. – Missouri S&T Baseball had seven players win All-GLVC awards, including Bricen Smith's (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) Co-Freshman of the Year honor.

Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) has been named the GLVC Co-Freshman of the Year, sharing the honor with Maryville's Jace Burton. Smith, a freshman transfer from Missouri, was third on the team with a .336 batting average this season. He appeared in 45 total games with 34 starts, primarily at second base. He had a slugging percentage of .528 and an on-base percentage of .336 to combine for a .945 OPS. Smith also had 42 hits, seven doubles, four triples and three home runs. On the base paths, he was 13-for-14 in stolen base attempts. Smith is just the third Freshman of the Year in Missouri S&T history. Thomas McCormick won in 2006 and Matt Knickerbocker earned the honor in 2017.

Will Beckham (Mountain Home, AR/Mountain Home) was named to the All-GLVC First Team for the Miners. Beckham was first on the team with a 1.182 OPS, his team-high .675 slugging percentage and .507 on-base percentage. He led the team with seven home runs along with his seven doubles and three triples. He was one of five players this season to record double-digit stolen bases with 10. Beckham was fourth in the GLVC in conference batting average with a .430 clip.

On the All-GLVC Second Team, Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) earned a spot as one of five outfielders. He leads the Miners this season with his .395 batting average in 43 games played. He has 45 hits, eight doubles, two home runs and 22 RBI. Baugus was almost perfect on the bases with 30 stolen bags in 32 attempts. He also drew 21 walks with only 21 strikeouts in 114 at-bats. His 1.022 OPS this season was second among qualified hitters.

Jake Schisler (Quincy, IL/Quincy Notre Dame) also earned a spot on the All-GLVC Second Team. Schisler ended the regular season fourth in the GLVC in ERA with his 3.98 clip. He pitched 61 total innings this season and posted a 6-3 record with two complete games. He limited opponents to just 23 walks with 33 strikeouts and only 10 extra-base hits. His batting average against was the third-best in the conference at .219. His WHIP of 1.18 was the lowest on the team this season.

Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) and Ethan Morrow (Lenexa, KS/Shawnee Mission West) were also honored for S&T as they made were named an All-GLVC Honorable Mention.

Meyer was one of two players to start all 49 games this season for S&T as he hit for .320 with a .903 OPS. His 57 hits, 45 RBI, 59 runs and 84 total bases all led the Miners this season.
He also drew 30 walks with just 23 punchouts. Meyer recorded two saves on the mound for S&T in two games pitched.

Morrow pitched in 46 1/3 regular season innings for S&T with nine starts. He collected a 4.86 ERA with 52 strikeouts, the most of any S&T pitcher. Morrow earned Pitcher of the Week honors on Mar. 17 for his scoreless outing with eight strikeouts at Maryville. The following week against McKendree, he tossed six innings with an unearned run given up and a season-high 12 punchouts.

Keaton Scott (Hannibal, MO/Hannibal) was named the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship honoree for Missouri S&T.

What's Next

The Miners will play in game one of the GLVC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Illinois Springfield. With a win, they will play on Thursday at 4 p.m. If they lose, their next game is scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m.
