MARION, Ill. – Guided by
Bricen Smith's (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) three hits and four runs, S&T Baseball defeated Quincy 7-6 on Friday afternoon to advance in the GLVC Tournament.
Miners 7, Hawks 6
In a thrilling game between Missouri S&T and Quincy, the Miners took down the Hawks 7-6.
S&T was on the board quickly as they took a 1-0 lead in the first.
Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) doubled and
Nick Krodinger (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) singled to plate Smith. In the third, Smith singled, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout.
Will Beckham (Mountain Home, AR/Mountain Home) grounded out to score Smith and increase the lead to 2-0.
Miners starter
Andrew Hedgecorth (Smithville, MO/Smithville) pitched four innings and gave up one run on five hits and two walks. The right-hander struck out four in his outing.
Nick Currie (Granville, IL/Putnam County) yielded a run in 2 1/3 innings with three punchouts.
The Hawks tied the game in the sixth inning until the Miners made it 4-2 in the seventh.
Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) walked and Smith was hit by a pitch. They pulled off a double steal and Krodinger walked to load the bases. A fielder's choice brought Baugus home and
Garrett Meyer's (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) RBI groundout made the score 4-2.
In the home half, Quincy scored four runs to take a 6-4 lead.
Bode Gebbink (Saint Joseph, IL/Saint Joseph-Ogden) surrendered four runs in 1/3 of an inning for S&T.
Jacob Cook (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) gave up one hit in his outing.
To start the eighth inning,
Tyler Prince (Mexico, MO/Mexico) was hit by a pitch and went to second on a wild pitch.
Aiden Cizek (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) singled but Prince was out at home on the play. After Baugus was hit by a pitch, Smith tripled down the left field line to tie the game. Krodinger scored Smith via sacrifice fly.
Reliever
Dylan Wipf (Oak Park, IL/River Forest) struck out five batters in two scoreless innings for S&T. He locked down the Hawks to earn his first win of the season.
Smith went 3-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored. He was a home run shy of the cycle. Baugus walked twice and scored twice. Both Krodinger and Beckham brought home two runs. The Miners totaled eight hits and four walks in the game. The pitching staff struck out 12 batters.
Baugus and Smith both stole a pair on the bases in this game.
The last time Missouri S&T won two games in the postseason was in the 2016 season during their run in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional.
What's Next
The Miners will take on #8 Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Against the Tritons this season, S&T and UMSL split their four-game series in Rolla.
