ROLLA, MO – Missouri S&T dropped 59-49 to the Lewis Flyers on Thursday night in a game marked by poor shooting from both teams, each finishing under 41% from the field. Despite the loss, Norah Gum's (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds kept the Miners competitive, earning her first career double-double in the process.
The Miners never led in the contest, falling behind early after Lewis' Taylor Gugliuzza hit a three-pointer on the Flyers' opening possession. Lewis shot 53.3% in the first quarter, including 50% from beyond the arc, and took a 19-10 lead going into the second.
Missouri S&T struggled offensively in the second quarter, making just 4 of 19 shots. However, the Miners' defense was strong, limiting the Flyers to just 9 shot attempts and holding them to 8 points. S&T outscored Lewis 9-8 in the quarter, but still trailed 27-19 at halftime.
Lewis came out firing in the third quarter, making their first three shots to extend the lead to 12 less than 90 seconds into the period. However, the Miners tightened up defensively, allowing only four more baskets for the rest of the quarter. With a couple of three pointers from Ava Maner (Rogers, AR/Providence Academy) and Gum, the Miners managed to cut the Flyers' lead to 5 points in the final minutes of the third.
Down by seven entering the fourth, the Miners had an early stop but couldn't convert on the offensive end. Lewis then made three consecutive shots, pushing their lead to 13 points at 51-38. S&T's shooting woes continued throughout the quarter, but a three-pointer from Gum with 1:26 left cut the Flyers' lead to 7, giving the Miners a glimmer of hope. However, Lewis sealed the victory by converting 5 of 6 free throws in the closing minutes.
Katelynne Roberts (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) led the team in scoring, recording 16 points to tie her second highest-scoring game of the season. Gum's double-double marked the second of the season for the Miners, with Roberts achieving the first in last week's contest against William Jewell. Notably, Missouri S&T played without two key contributors, Morgan Luebbering (St. Thomas, MO/Fatima) and Bonnie Lew Ludlow (Indianapolis, IN/Covenant Christian), who missed time due to illness/injury.
