ROLLA, Mo. – Two members of Missouri S&T's golf team that landed all-region honors for the 2023-24 season have earned honors for their work in the classroom as well, as
Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) and
Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) have been named to the first team on the College Sports Communicators' Academic All-America team.
The Miner duo, who helped S&T finish second in match play at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships and earn a berth to the NCAA Division II Central/Midwest Regional for the second time in as many seasons, made the Academic All-America team for the second year in succession. Thybo was a first team selection following the 2022-23 season, while Miltun was a third team pick on that same squad.
Both players were All-Midwest region selections on the PING all-region team by the Golf Coaches Association of America and also earned All-GLVC honors for their play during the past season.
Miltun, the GLVC's Player of the Year, completed a standout career for the Miners that saw him earn first-team All-GLVC honors in all four seasons at S&T. This season, Miltun finished third at the GLVC Championships as he recorded a stroke average of 70.7 shots per round. He finished fifth or better in seven of the team's 11 tournaments, which included a win at the Maverick Spring Invitational in Arizona in February, a second place finish and two third place showings in events this season.
He finished last week's NCAA Division II Central/Midwest Regional in a tie for 23
rd place with a one-under-par score of 209 and was the 43
rd-ranked player in NCAA Division II. He became the first Miner to earn the GLVC's Player of the Year award this season.
Over his S&T career, Miltun earned medalist honors and being named as the GLVC's Freshman of the Year in 2020-21 while also earning an at-large spot to compete at the NCAA regional tournament. He has followed that up with three more first-team All-GLVC awards and won medalist honors again in record fashion during his junior season, where he set GLVC marks for the lowest score for a round, lowest score for a tournament and lowest score to par. He was named to the PING All-America second team and All-Midwest region team after the 2022-23 campaign.
Miltun capped the 2022-23 season by finishing fifth at the Central/Midwest Regional and tied for 14
th at the NCAA Division II Championships.
Thybo had a strong season as well for S&T, finishing the season as the medalist at the Arch Cup and the Ken Partridge Invitational among his three top-five finishes during the year that earned him first-team All-GLVC honors. He had an additional finish among the top 10 this season as he averaged around 73 shots per round over the course of the campaign.
He was S&T's top performer at the regional as he finished in a tie for 14
th place with a score of 207 and shot a 67 in the opening round of competition. He had six top-10 finishes last season and tied for 20
th at the Central/Midwest Regional as well as finishing in a tie for 36
th at the NCAA Division II Championships.
Miltun and Thybo were among five individuals from GLVC institutions – two were from Indianapolis and one from Maryville -- named to the first team on the at-large squad, which incorporates all sports that do not individual Academic All-America teams. A sixth individual from Maryville was named to the third team.
The two selections gives Missouri S&T a final total of seven individuals to earn Academic All-America awards during the 2023-24 academic year, the third-largest number in one year in school history behind the eight selected after the 2013-14 and 2017-18 campaigns. S&T has had five Academic All-America selections in golf and now has 127 all-time awards in the history of the program, including at least five in each of the last four years.
During the 2023-24 season, Missouri S&T's golf team won two tournaments, finished second in five other tournaments and took third in the stroke play portion of the GLVC Championships before finishing as the conference runner-up in match play. S&T finished sixth at the NCAA Division II Central/Midwest Regional in May.
