Trio of Miners selected to compete at NCAA-II Outdoor Track Championships

5/14/2024 4:32:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T will have three representatives competing at the NCAA Division II Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships next week, as Jacob Luebbert (Warsaw, MO/Warsaw), Owen Fraser (Kirksville, MO/Kirksville) and Otto Knittel (Spring Hill, KS/Spring Hill) have all been selected for the field that will be in Emporia, Kan., beginning on Thursday, May 23.

Luebbert will be making his fourth trip to a national competition and has placed among the top eight in the previous three, the most recent being a seventh place finish in the weight throw at the 2024 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships.  Last season, he finished third in the hammer throw at the outdoor championships after placing fourth in the weight throw indoors.

Luebbert recorded the second-best mark in the nation this season in winning the hammer throw at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships of 225-10, which is just under two feet behind the top mark posted by Walsh's Dominic Nutter of 227-4.  He will compete in the hammer on Thursday, May 23 at 12:30 p.m.

For Fraser and Knittel, it will be the first trip for each of them to the national meet.  Fraser comes in as the 12th-ranked competitor in Division II in the discus throw with a top mark of 181-3, which he recorded at the Drake Relays to set a new S&T record.  He finished second in the discus at the GLVC Outdoor Championships and was sixth in that event when he set the school standard at the Drake Relays.

Fraser is scheduled to compete in the discus, where the top mark in the nation is held by Truman State's Jacob Morris of 194-8, on Friday, May 24 at 1:30 p.m.

Knittel moved into the field after setting a school record mark of 6,921 points in the decathlon last week at the Harding Last Chance meet and his score was ranked 15th at the conclusion of the weekend competition.  Knittel has competed in three decathlons this season and has increased his point total each time, which included a mark of 6,702 points to win the GLVC title for the second season in a row.

The top decathlon mark this season is 7,616 points by Pittsburg State's Hunter Jones.  The decathlon competition will take place during the first two days of the national meet on May 23 and 24.
