SMITHVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T's golf team fell just short of capturing its first-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference championship in the sport on Tuesday, as the Miners fell 3-2 in the championship contest in match play to Indianapolis at Paradise Pointe Golf Course.
S&T reached the title contest by sweeping Missouri-St. Louis 5-0 in the semifinals – the Miners' first win in match play at a GLVC championship event, but came up short in the finals as UIndy got wins from its final two players to win the title.
The Miners, who are ranked second in the NCAA Division II Midwest region, are expected to receive a bid to the regional tournament when that field is announced on Friday. The regionals will get underway on May 9 in Edmond, Okla.
Championship: Indianapolis 3, Miners 2
The Miners won two of the first three pairings that reached the clubhouse, as
Connor Benjamin (Nelson Bay, Australia/St. Philip's Christian College) shot a 72 to defeat Maverick Conaway by three shots and
Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) posted a 73 to earn a one-stroke win over Alexander Nestun.
Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) was edged by one shot by Simon Engman after posting a score of 75 in his round.
However, UIndy's Ben Keil defeated
Cole Komyati (Elberta, AL/Bayside Academy) by two shots after Komyati finished with a 75 and
Isaac To's (Petaling Jaya, Malaysia/Real International School) 77 was not enough to overtake Cameron Young in the last head-to-head match to finish.
Benjamin had four birdies and Miltun had three in their championship rounds.
Semifinals: Miners 5, Missouri-St. Louis 0
In the opening match of the day, all five Miners shot par or better on the par-72 course, which included a pair of sub-70 rounds for S&T.
Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) recorded a nine-stroke win over Leo Baudry by shooting a 68, while
Cole Komyati (Elberta, AL/Bayside Academy) won by seven shots over Dani Solavera with a one-under-par 71.
Isaac To (Petaling Jaya, Malaysia/Real International School) clinched the Miners' spot in the title match by shooting a 72 to edge Rob Hogan by one shot.
Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) shot a 66 in his 12-shot win over Zach Unnerstall to complete the fourth win by a Miner in the semis, while
Connor Benjamin (Nelson Bay, Australia/St. Philip's Christian College) completed the five-match sweep by shooting a 71 to finish four shots in front of tournament medalist Cyril Henault
The Miners had three eagles in the semifinal round, one each by Thybo – who also had four birdies along the way – Miltun and To. Miltun had five birdies during the UMSL match, while Benjamin and Komyati finished with four apiece.
