S&T gets two provisional marks, school record on last day of busy weekend

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri S&T's track & field teams are split up between three meets over three days this weekend, with individuals competing at the Washington University Distance Carnival in St. Louis, the Joey Haines Invitational in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and the Southwest Baptist Invitational in Bolivar.

Through Friday, the Miners have made a pair of NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks as Owen Fraser (Kirksville, MO/Kirksville) and Otto Knittel (Spring Hill, KS/Spring Hill) hit marks on Friday in the shot put and decathlon, respectively.

Following is a recap of the daily results for the Missouri S&T competitors.

Saturday's results:

The Miners got two NCAA Division II provisional marks as well as a school record at the Southwest Baptist Invitational, while also getting an event win on the day.

The event win came in the 4x100-meter relay, where the team of Kyle Burke (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield), Sam Wright (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro), Reece Johnson (Festus, MO/Festus) and Samuel Schmidt crossed the finish line in 41.36 seconds.  Burke also reached a provisional mark during the day in the 110-meter hurdles, where he finished in fifth place with a time of 14.39 seconds.

Paulvin Horton (Raleigh, NC/Garner) recorded the other provisional mark with his second place showing in the triple jump of 49-1¾, which also made a provisional qualifying mark.

Wright had a second place finish in the 400-meter hurdles in 54.52 seconds, while Rhet Liley (Jackson, MO/Jackson) had a seventh place showing in the javelin with a throw of 190-8 as did Schmidt in the 100-meter dash in 10.95 seconds and Shaun Wolfe (Fulton, MO/Fulton) in the 5,000-meters with his time of 16:19.92. 

Braden Stillmaker (Spring Hill, KS/Spring Hill) finished right behind Wolfe in the 5,000 in 16:21.93 and Nathan Apple (Louisburg, KS/Louisburg) took eighth in the 400-hurdles in 57.92 seconds along with Schmidt in the 200-meters in 21.82 seconds.

Isaac Pollard (Lindale, TX/Lindale) tied for ninth in the pole vault as he cleared 13-9¾ as was Apple in the 110-hurdles in 15.56 seconds and Levi Frisbee in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:19.09. Michael Pate (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) was 10th in the 400-meters in 50.20 seconds.

S&T's women's team had two top-10 finishers Saturday in Hailey Smith (Wentzville, MO/Timberland), who placed eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 36-6¼ and Sydney Stephens (Plattsburg, MO/Plattsburg), the 10th place finisher in the discus with her top mark of 132-1.

Missouri S&T will compete next weekend at the Truman State Invitational in Kirksville, Mo.

Friday's results:

Missouri S&T had competitors in the multi-events at the Joey Haines Invitational, with Knittel leading the way with a second place showing in the decathlon with a score of 6,612 points that made the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard.  Knittel recorded career-best marks in the long jump portion of the competition with a leap of 6.61 meters and 1,500-meters with a time of 4:45.45.

S&T had three others in the decathlon, with Dawson Sherer (Galena, MO/Galena) finishing sixth with 6,108 points, Caleb Craft (Jackson, MO/Jackson) seventh with 6,014 and Kamden Lockwood (Herscher, IL/Herscher) in 10th with his point total of 5,849.

Maya Wright (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro) finished in fifth place in the heptathlon with a total of 4,177 points, while Lauryn Fenoglio (Granite City, IL/Granite City) finished eighth with 3,740 points.

At Southwest Baptist, the Miners got second place finishes in both events contested on Friday as Jacob Luebbert (Warsaw, MO/Warsaw) finished there in the hammer throw with a mark of 203-7 and Owen Fraser (Kirksville, MO/Kirksville) took second in the shot put with his top mark of 54-11¼.  Fraser, whose mark in the shot made the NCAA's provisional standard, placed sixth as well in the hammer at 174-8 and Kevin McCole (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell) finished eighth at 167-2.

The Miners had four of the top seven finishers in the shot put, as Tyler Marchert (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln-Way East) was fourth at 53-0¼, Ethan Crouch (Rolla, MO/Rolla) was sixth with a throw of 51-1¾ and Luebbert took seventh at 49-10.

Among the women, Sydney Stephens (Plattsburg, MO/Plattsburg) finished fourth in the shot put with a top mark of 41-1 and Paige Lambright (Poplar Grove, IL/Belvidere North) was sixth with her top showing of 40-0¾.  Stephens also had a fifth place mark in the hammer throw of 144-8 and Lambright took eighth in that event where she had a mark of 129-9.

Thursday's results:

At the Washington University Distance Carnival, Clare Holmes (Camdenton, MO/Camdenton) won her heat in the women's 5,000-meters in a time of 19:55.50, while Emma Puetz (Rolla, MO/Rolla) – running in a later heat – finisher her race in 17:46.41.  Kelly Zipfel (St. Louis, MO/Ursuline Academy) also ran in the event and finished in 21:57.

Henry Born (Lake Quivira, KS/Shawnee Mission Northwest) had the top time for S&T in the 5,000-meters with a school record mark of 14:44.34, while Lucas Rackers (Florissant, MO/St. Louis University HS) finished in a time of 14:53.60 that was a second off the previous school standard.  Daniel Garrison (Liberty, MO/Liberty) recorded a time of 15:30 in his race and Caleb Schoenberg (Wentzville, MO/Timberland) had a mark of 16:07 in his heat.

S&T had four runners in the men's 10,000-meters, led by Samuel Patterson (Cameron, NC/Union Pines) and Joshua Patterson (Cameron, NC/Union Pines) with identical times of 32:45.  Jorge Cantu (Cypress, TX/Bridgeland) finished his race in 35:30 and Jacob Meyers (Lake St. Louis, MO/Homeschooled) had a time of 35:30 as well.
