INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Despite getting two conference championship performances Sunday from Paulvin Horton (Raleigh, NC/Garner), Missouri S&T's men's track & field team fell short of repeating as Great Lakes Valley Conference champions with a second place at the league's indoor meet that concluded Sunday.

Horton opened the day by capturing the high jump championship with a mark of 6-5½, where he was the only one of the three remaining competitors to clear the bar at that height.  Later in the session, Horton won the triple jump on his final attempt as he recorded a leap of 48-11 that not only broke the school record, but also made an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark.

Horton's two winning performances on Sunday, coupled with a second place finish in the long jump on Saturday, earned him the GLVC's Field Athlete of the Year award for the indoor season.

Besides the two winning performances by Horton, the Miners got second place showings from Caleb Craft (Jackson, MO/Jackson) in the heptathlon with a score of 4,551 points, Ethan Crouch (Rolla, MO/Rolla) in the shot put with a mark of 52-2¾, Henry Born (Lake Quivira, KS/Shawnee Mission Northwest) in the 3,000-meters in 8:28.71, Samuel Schmidt in the 60-meters in 6.91 seconds and Kyle Burke (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield) in the 60-meter hurdles as he finished in 8.29 seconds.

Schmidt was edged by Lewis' Cody Machlet by 0.004 seconds in a photo finish in that race.

Kamden Lockwood (Herscher, IL/Herscher) had a third place performance in the heptathlon with 4,505 points, while Owen Fraser (Kirksville, MO/Kirksville) took fourth in the shot put at 51-10 as did Lucas Rackers (Florissant, MO/St. Louis University HS) in the mile with a time of 4:16.21.  Luke Myszka (Downs, IL/Tri-Valley) finished fifth in the 60-hurdles in 8.42 seconds and Schmidt did so as well in the 200-meters in 22.14 seconds, while Justin Chadwell (Norwood, MO/Norwood) took sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 44-10 ¾ along with Reece Johnson (Festus, MO/Festus) in the 60-meters in 7.07 seconds.

Jacob Lubbert was S&T's third scorer in the shot put as he recorded a throw of 49-4½ that was good for seventh place, a spot also reached by Tristan Jones (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro) in the triple jump at 44-6 and Sam Wright (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro) in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.49 seconds.  Wright also finished eighth in the 200-meters in 22.61 seconds as did Nathan Apple (Louisburg, KS/Louisburg) in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.52 seconds.  S&T's 4x400-meter relay team of Ethan Ptacek (Louisburg, KS/Louisburg), Apple, Jake Lansdowne (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) and Donovan Bryant (Junction City, KS/Junction City) also placed eighth in 3:30.58.

The Miners finished the meet with 126 points, well behind champion Lewis – who finished with 196 – while ending up 34 points in front of Indianapolis.  As a team, the Miners were named as the recipient of the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award for the indoor track season, while Andrew Bacon (Webster Groves, MO/Webster Groves) was S&T's individual honoree.
