INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Each of Missouri S&T's track & field teams had school record performances in the weight throw on the first day of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, where the men's team sits in third place and the women's squad in fifth after the opening day of competition.
Jacob Luebbert (Warsaw, MO/Warsaw) broke the S&T school record in finishing third in the weight throw with a mark of 68-1¾, while the highest finish Saturday came from
Paulvin Horton (Raleigh, NC/Garner) in the long jump with his leap of 22-7¼.
S&T also got a fourth place finish from
Lucas Rackers (Florissant, MO/St. Louis University HS) in the 5,000-meters at 14:53.60, while
Xander Hall (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) finished fifth in the pole vault as he cleared 14-5½ and
Owen Fraser (Kirksville, MO/Kirksville) finished sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 58-4½. S&T's distance medley relay team of
Jorge Cantu (Cypress, TX/Bridgeland),
Ethan Ptacek (Louisburg, KS/Louisburg),
Aiden Kearns (St. Charles, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) and
Evan Mitchell (Shawnee, KS/Shawnee Mission Northwest) also scored with an eighth place finish in 10:37.25.
In the preliminary rounds on Saturday, S&T got four of the eight qualifying spots in the 60-meter hurdles in
Kyle Burke (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield) – who had the fastest time of 8.26 seconds –
Luke Myszka (Downs, IL/Tri-Valley),
Nathan Apple (Louisburg, KS/Louisburg) and
Sam Wright (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro), while Samuel Schmidt and
Reece Johnson (Festus, MO/Festus) made the finals in the 60-meter dash. Schmidt was also the fastest qualifier in the 200-meters at 21.96 seconds and will be joined by Wright in the final.
Missouri S&T also has three of the top five in the heptathlon after the first four events, led by
Caleb Craft (Jackson, MO/Jackson) in third place with 2,558 points. Craft had the best time in the 60-meters of 7.28 seconds to pace his efforts on Saturday. Kamen Lockwood sits in fourth place with 2,441 points and
Dawson Sherer (Galena, MO/Galena) is fifth with 2,412 points, which included a mark of 12.61 meters in the shot put that was the best among the competitors.
On the women's side, the Miners had three scoring performances on Saturday that was led by Maya Wright's third place finish in the pentathlon with 3,241 points. She was one of two Miners to score in the multi-events, as Lauryn Fenoglio finished seventh with 2,887 points.
Paige Lambright placed eighth in the weight throw with her mark of 49-4½ that also established a new S&T standard. Sydney Stephens, who held the previous mark, also surpassed it in finishing ninth with a top throw of 48-4½.
Wright also earned a spot in Sunday's finals of the 60-meter hurdles with her preliminary time of 9.33 seconds.
The meet will conclude Sunday at the Fall Creek Pavillion.
