SACRAMENTO, Ca. --
Henry Born (Lake Quivira, KS/Shawnee Mission Northwest) placed 66th out of 259 competitors at this year's NCAA Division II Cross Country championships. His 10k time of 31:00.4 is a new modern school record and personal record, with Born improving on his Midwest Regional time by 15 seconds despite the muddy and wet conditions.
Born started the race of fast, crossing the 1k marker in 2:52.2 in 29th place. This was a departure from how he ran at Regionals, where he started slower and gained ground through middle of the race. Born would settle into a groove over the next several markers though, sliding back into the 56th place as he found his pace. Around the halfway point in the race Born dropped back again, this time to 65th, where he would stick for most of the race, eventually dropping to 67th at the final marker before climbing back up to 66th at the finish line.
Born was one of ten Great Lakes Valley Conference runners at the meet. He finished 3rd out of the GLVC athletes present at Nationals, with only Lewis' Evan Horgan and Sean Ryan crossing ahead of him.
