JOPLIN, Mo. – Missouri S&T Women's Basketball fell to Missouri Southern on Tuesday night by a final score of 65-76.
At the first quarter break, the Miners were down 20-15. The Lions went up 9-0 after the first three minutes but S&T brought it back within two points at 13-11. Two free throws at the end of the quarter by the Lions gave them a five-point advantage.
S&T went down by 10 points at halftime after Missouri Southern outscored the Miners 18-13 in the second quarter. The two teams traded points, but the Miners made it a six-point game after a layup from
Morgan Luebbering (St. Thomas, MO/Fatima). With two minutes left, Luebbering made the score 28-32. However, the Lions picked up six points in the last 1:39 of the half. Luebbering recorded nine first half points in just 4:31.
Anna Finley (Owensville, MO/Owensville) had five points with five rebounds.
Addyson Kent (North Vernon, IN/Jennings County) started the scoring in the second half with a three-pointer to make it a seven-point game. Missouri Southern went out to a 47-35 lead midway through the quarter. That lead went down to seven points with another three from Kent. Just 12 second later, Mia Topping responded with a three ball. The quarter ended at 45-55.
The Miners shot 62.5% in the fourth quarter but fell to the Lions 65-76. 30 second into the quarter, S&T made it an eight-point game but the Lions responded right back to take a double-digit lead. They eventually went out to a 16-point lead with 6:23 left. Luebbering capped off her night with a three-pointer to end the game.
Luebbering led the team with 15 points with 5-for-7 shooting. Her 15 points was a new career high.
Katelynne Roberts (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) tallied eight points, six rebounds, three blocks and two assists. Finley had seven points and seven rebounds in her first game since 2022. The seven rebounds set a new career best. She also added four assists and two steals.
Norah Gum (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo),
Franchesca Metz (Downers Grove, IL/Nazareth Academy),
Addyson Kent (North Vernon, IN/Jennings County) and
Bonnie Lew Ludlow (Indianapolis, IN/Covenant Christian) all collected seven points.
As a team, the Miners shot 41.5% from the field and 26.3% from beyond the arc. They were 16-for-21 from the free throw line with only six fouls against S&T. They also picked up 28 points in the paint, 13 points off turnovers and 29 bench points.
What's Next
Missouri S&T will start an eight-game homestand on Saturday night against Cottey at 7 p.m. Following that game, they will welcome Hannibal-LaGrange at 5:30 p.m. The Miners will go back on the road when the calendar turns on Jan. 3 at Truman State.
