ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T Men's Soccer earned their sixth win of the season over Illinois Springfield on Friday night.
The Miners moved to 6-1-2 after their win over the Prairie Stars, who hadn't been beaten in regular season GLVC play since 2022.
In the early part of the second half, the Miners put their first goal in the back of the net.
Daylan Frerker (Collinsvillle, IL/Collinsville) set up
Mike Banasik (Loekkegade, Denmark/Hjoering Gymnasium) in the third minute to give S&T a 1-0 lead. Just a few minutes later, two shots from
Luiz Bernis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Santo Antonio) and one by
Mustafa Hasan (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) were all saved. Hasan was saved again in the 20
th minute and Banasik was denied by goalkeeper Joe Brudnak in the 30
th minute. UIS did not have a shot on goal in the first half.
Midway through the half, UIS missed a penalty kick but tied the score in the 75
th minute. Joey Fitzgerald passed it to Kevin Herrera who tied the match. Later in the half, Banasik scored his second of the match to make the score 2-1.
Luke Giesing (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) assisted Banasik. The Miners defense held strong as they won the match 2-1 over the Prairie Stars.
Banasik totaled five shots and three shots on goal with his two goals. Bernis collected four shots and two shots on goal. Hasan tallied two shots on goal and
Nathan Weyrauch (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) had one. S&T held UIS to 11 shots and only two shots on goal.
With the win, the Miners moved into fourth place in the GLVC, tied with UIS. They are one point behind Maryville and three points behind #9 McKendree. Their six wins is the second-most in the conference, one behind McKendree.
What's Next
The Miners will face the #9 Bearcats on Sunday afternoon at home. S&T will look to maintain an undefeated record at home as they go in 4-0. The game is slated for 2:30 p.m. Tickets for Sunday's match can be found
