ROLLA, Mo. – While the Missouri S&T golf team is in competition at the NCAA Division II Championships, a trio of student-athletes have been named to the Academic All-District at-large team as selected by the College Sports Communicators.
Missouri S&T's two individuals on the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference team –
Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) and
Gustav Liljedahl (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) – were named along with
Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) to the squad and will be eligible for Academic All-America honors when that team is released in June. To be eligible, student-athletes need to have a 3.5 or better cumulative grade point average at the institution and have been at the school for at least one full academic year.
The at-large team covers all sports that do not have sport-specific teams and includes sports such as men's volleyball and lacrosse.
Miltun, a mechanical engineering major at S&T, captured medalist honors at the GLVC Championships and the Findlay Spring Invitational during the season before finishing fifth at the NCAA Central/Midwest Regional. Miltun also recorded a second place showing at the Tunica Cup and added a third place finish at the Hillcat Classic in Oklahoma.
During the season, Miltun averaged 71.2 shots in the 30 rounds he played. He set new GLVC records in his winning performance at the conference championships by posting an overall score of 203 to finish 13 shots under par and winning the event by 10 strokes. His second round score of 63, the lowest in GLVC history, also tied the course record at Paradise Pointe Golf Course.
Liljedahl, who is majoring in mechanical engineering as well, opened the 2022-23 season by earning medalist honors at the Arch Cup with an overall score of 135 that included a first round 64. He also finished in a tie for first at the Watkins Invitational in Winona, Minn., and tied for fourth at the Music City Invitational in April.
During the season, Liljedahl also played 30 rounds and averaged 73.3 strokes per round; his lowest 54-hole score of 218 came at the Findlay Spring Invitational.
Thybo is majoring in physics at S&T and had an average of 73.2 shots in his 30 rounds of play this season, with a top finish of third at the McKendree Invitational. He also placed fourth at the Watkins Invitational and posted his top 54-hole score of 215 at the Findlay Spring Invitaitonal as well, where he finished in sixth place. Thybo was also the team's nominee for the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award.
