ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's two participants in the upcoming NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, as well as three additional members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference's men's championship team, have been selected to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's All-Midwest region team for the 2023 season.
Nathan Swadley (Willard, MO/Willard) and
Jacob Luebbert (Warsaw, MO/Warsaw), who will be competing for S&T at the national meet next weekend in Pueblo, Colo., were selected along with hurdler
Kyle Burke (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield), triple jumper
Paulvin Horton (Raleigh, NC/Garner) and decathlete
Otto Knittel (Spring Hill, KS/Spring Hill) to the All-Midwest region team.
The top five individuals in each event from each of the eight NCAA regions earned the all-region honors. Missouri S&T's five selections were among a total of 22 from schools in the GLVC on the men's side and 24 women that earned the distinction during the outdoor season.
Luebbert owns the second-best performance in the region this season in the hammer throw, as he recorded a school record mark of 210-5 at the Dewey Allgood Invitational held at S&T in April. A week later, Luebbert captured the hammer throw title at the Drake Relays with a throw of 209-4 that allowed him to become the first non-Division I winner of that event at that meet in at least a decade.
Swadley, the GLVC champion in the shot put, had the fifth-best performance of the season of 59-7½ at the Beach Invitational. That mark was just one-quarter of an inch off the school record in the event and earned him his sixth trip to a national meet in his career.
Knittel was also a conference champion this season in the decathlon, where his total of 6,515 points in the meet hosted by Missouri S&T was the second-most in the region this season.
Burke earned his honor in the 110-meter hurdles, where his top time of 14.35 seconds at the GLVC Championships ranked as the fourth-fastest in the region this season. Horton, meanwhile, recorded the fifth-best mark in the region in the triple jump at the conference meet when he recorded a leap of 47-0¼.
Swadley earned the third all-region award in his career and Luebbert was named for the second time as both were also selected during the indoor season. The all-region honors are the first for Knittel, Burke and Horton in their collegiate careers.
