S&T opens outdoor track season with Miner Invitational this weekend

ROLLA, Mo. – The first of four track & field meets that will be hosted by Missouri S&T during the 2023 outdoor season will take place this weekend at the Miner Invitational will be contested on Friday and Saturday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

On Friday, the competition will consist of the first day of the multi-events, with the decathlon 100-meter dash kicking things off at 1 p.m. and the first event of the heptathlon, the 100-meter hurdles, slated to begin at 2 p.m.  In addition, the men's and women's hammer throw will take place at the throws area just outside the stadium complex beginning with the women's side of the event at 1 p.m.

The multi-events will resume on Saturday at 9 a.m., then competition in the men's discus, men's long jump, women's javelin and women's shot put begins at 11 a.m.  The first running event of the day, the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, will kick off the running events starting at noon.

Besides the Miners, the field will include six other Great Lakes Valley Conference schools as Lewis, Drury, McKendree, Truman State, Maryville and Southwest Baptist will be among the participants. 

The other teams in this weekend's meet include future GLVC member Lincoln, Missouri Southern, Hannibal-LaGrange, Westminster, Harris-Stowe, Fontbonne, William Woods, Missouri Baptist, Columbia College, Missouri Valley, State Fair Community College and Mineral Area College.

Missouri S&T had five individuals earn championships at the GLVC Indoor Championships, including Nathan Swadley (Willard, MO/Willard) and Jacob Luebbert (Warsaw, MO/Warsaw) who would go on to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships.  Swadley earned his honors in the shot put and Luebbert in the weight throw, while the Miners also got GLVC titles from Aaron Toben (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) in the 400-meter dash, Samuel Schmidt in the 200-meters and Otto Knittel (Spring Hill, KS/Spring Hill) in the heptathlon on their way to winning the team championship.  GLVC pole vault runner-up Jake Anderson (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) will compete in that event Saturday.

S&T's women's team did not have an individual champion at the GLVC meet, but did have several high finishers that included Maya Wright (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro) as she finished second in the pentathlon, Sydney Stephens (Plattsburg, MO/Plattsburg) after her fourth place showing in the shot put and Kassandra Hayes (Rolla, MO/Rolla), who also took fourth in the shot put.  Annmarie Tyson (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy), who represented S&T at the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, will also compete this weekend in the high jump. 

A number of other GLVC indoor champions will also compete in this weekend's meet, including men's long jump champion Zach Olenek and 60-meter hurdles champ Connor Wagner from Lewis, men's high jump champion Brendan Harter from McKendree, women's high jump champion Nadia Roberts and 400-meter champion Kyla Chambers from Lewis and Luz Olivera, the women's 3,000-meter champion from Drury.

Admission to Saturday's meet will be free of charge.
