PITTSBURG, Kan. – Missouri S&T's
Hayes Pateidl (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley West) set a new school record in the mile on Saturday and also anchored a relay team that set another mark made an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark to highlight the performances by the S&T track & field teams at the Gorilla Classic at Pittsburg State University.
Pateidl completed the mile in 4:13.62, bettering his own mark that he set on the same track last season. Later in the afternoon, he served as the anchor in the distance medley relay where he joined
Lucas Rackers (Florissant, MO/St. Louis University HS),
Aaron Toben (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) and
Andrew Bacon (Webster Groves, MO/Webster Groves) to record a time of 10:03.73 that broke the previous mark by better than three seconds and also fell under the NCAA's provisional qualifying standard in that event.
On Friday,
Jacob Luebbert (Warsaw, MO/Warsaw) placed fourth in the weight throw with a top mark of 65-5 and was the only Miner to finish among the top 10 on the first day of the meet. Saturday's performances included a fifth place finish from
Nathan Swadley (Willard, MO/Willard) in the shot put as he posted a mark of 57-3½, while
Jake Anderson (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) recorded a 14
th place finish in the invitational pole vault as he cleared 15-2.
The Miners also got a 15
th place showing from the team of Toben,
Otto Knittel (Spring Hill, KS/Spring Hill),
Sam Wright (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro) and
Michael Pate (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:18.15, which was three-tenths of a second off the school record.
The women's team had three performances that fell within the top 15 in their respective events, as Olivia Henkel was 10
th in the high jump on Friday as she cleared 4-11½ and Annmarie Tyson competed Saturday in the invitational high jump and cleared 5-2 ¼ to take 12
th. Sydney Gratz finished 14
th in the pole vault as she cleared 10-3¼.
Missouri S&T's next scheduled competition will be at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships, which will take place Feb. 24-26 in Indianapolis.
