Five firsts highlight first day for Miners at Principia Relays

ELSAH, Ill. – Missouri S&T's track & field teams recorded five first place finishes Friday on the opening day of competition at the Principia Relays, while also posting several finishes among the top five in various events throughout the day.

Jacob Luebbert won the weight throw competition with the second-best mark in school history of 66-11, while Paulvin Horton captured the high jump by clearing 6-4¾  and Aaron Toben won an event for the second straight week by capturing the 200-meters in 22.65 seconds.

Luebbert's win in the weight throw had him among five Miners in the top six in the event, where Nathan Swadley was second at 54-feet and Kevin McCole took third at 49-5.  S&T also got a fifth place finish in the event from Owen Fraser with a mark of 48-11 and a sixth from Tyler Marchert as he posted a throw of 47-10.  Meanwhile, Jake Anderson finished in a tie for first in the pole vault with Greenville's Wesley Kile as he went over the bar at 15-feet.

The Miners' team of Daniel Garrison, Andrew Pommer, Andrew Bacon and Braden Stillmaker took third in the distance medley with a time of 11:03.36, while S&T's other team in the event of Lucas Rackers, Ashton Ventura, Jorge Cantu and Jacob Meyers finished sixth in 11:09.16.

Fourth place finishes came from Isaac Pollard in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-11½ and Michael Pate in the 400-meters in 23.12 seconds.

Anderson later recorded a fifth place effort in the long jump with a leap of 20-4½, while Samuel Patterson took fifth in the 5,000-meters in 16:01.09.  The Miners also got seventh place showings from Caleb Graham when he cleared 11-11¾ in the pole vault and Joshua Patterson in the 5,000-meters in 16:11.85.

In addition, Sam Wright made the finals in the 60-meter hurdles with the fastest preliminary time of 8.48 seconds, while Samuel Schmidt qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash on Saturday with a time of 7.05 seconds.

Through the first four events of the heptathlon, Dawson Shearer is in second place with 2,553 points, while Otto Knittel currently sits in fourth with 2,515, Caleb Craft in sixth with 2,405 and Kamden Lockwood in eighth with his total of 2,185.  Shearer had a mark of 39-10 that was the best in the shot put portion of the competition.

Missouri S&T's women had the top two finishers in the 5,000-meters in Aubrie Caldwell (Dripping Springs, TX/Dripping Springs), who won the race in 19:11.58 and Emma Mueller (St. Louis, MO/Oakville), who had a time of 20:09.93 for her second place finish.

The Miners had a trio of second place finishes that came from Annmarie Tyson (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy) in the long jump with a mark of 15-10½, Maya Wright (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro) in the pentathlon with a total of 2,794 points and their distance medley relay team of Clare Holmes (Camdenton, MO/Camdenton), Emma Puets, Grace Giesler (Owasso, OK/Owasso) and Victoria Regitz (Rockville, MD/Rockville), as that quartet finished with a time of 13:34.97.

Wright did win the 800-meter leg of the multi-event competition and recorded the second-best mark in the long jump portion of 15-5.

Sydney Stephens (Plattsburg, MO/Plattsburg) placed third in the weight throw with a showing of 49-3 and Jessica Rhoads (Holts Summit, MO/Jefferson City) finished fifth with a toss of 46-4.

The two-day meet will wrap up on Saturday.
