ROLLA, Mo. – For the second consecutive year, Missouri S&T swimmer
Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) has been selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America's Academic All-America team as a first team selection.
A first-team selection last year as well, Huffman is the third Missouri S&T student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors during the 2021-22 school year. He is one of seven swimmers that were named to the at-large squad, which consists of student-athletes competing in sports that do not have a specific Academic All-America squad for them.
Huffman, who received his bachelor's degree in engineering management from S&T in May, completed a standout career in the S&T swimming program this winter as he earned 13 All-America awards during his four seasons of competition. He won three of the honors during the 2021-22 season as he finished 10
th in the 200-yard breaststroke, 13
th in the 400-yard individual medley and 14
th in the 200-yard butterfly at the NCAA meet in March.
In the 2020-21 season, Huffman became the first Missouri S&T student-athlete to be named as the recipient of the NCAA Elite 90 Award as well as being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team. Throughout his career, he has also earned additional academic honors, including being a three-time selection to the conference's all-academic team, the College Swimming Coaches Association of America's Scholar All-America squad and to the GLVC's Brother James Gaffney Distinguished Scholars list for completing an academic year with a 4.0 grade point average.
At the 2021 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, Huffman earned All-America awards in seven events. His performances were headed by finishing third in the 200-yard breaststroke – his top career finish at an NCAA meet -- as well as a sixth place showing in the 200-yard butterfly. He also won the consolation final in the 200-yard individual medley and was part of four relay teams (both medley relays and the 400- and 800-yard freestyle relays) that scored points at the national meet.
He completed his career as the holder of three school records, two of which were set at last year's national meet with marks of 1:47.47 in the 200-IM and the 200-butterfly with his time of 1:46.50. He is also the holder of the S&T school record in the 400-yard individual medley of 3:51.98.
Huffman won four GLVC championships during his career at S&T, twice winning the 200-yard breaststroke (2019 and 2021) as well as titles in the 200- and 400-yard individual medley; he was named as the GLVC's Freshman of the Year following the 2019 conference meet.
With this selection -- the 20
th all-time for a Miner swimmer -- Missouri S&T now has earned 112 Academic All-America awards, which ranks among the top 10 among NCAA Division II institutions. Earlier this year, two members of the Miner football team – Zach Glaess and Kyle Urich – were named to that Academic All-America team.
