COLUMBIA, Mo. – The second day of the Mizzou Invitational saw Missouri S&T get its first NCAA Division II qualifying mark, as
Noah Clancy (Alton, IL/Alton) reached the B-cut standard in the 100-yard backstroke to highest the Miner performances on Thursday.
Clancy reached the provisional standard in the morning preliminaries as he posted a time of 48.70 seconds in the 100-back; he would end up sixth in the finals as he had a mark of 49 seconds flat.
Connor Bichsel (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit West) narrowly missed reaching the provisional mark in the 400-yard individual medley while finishing fifth in the event, recording a time of 4:00.88 that was 0.46 seconds off the time needed. The Miners had three of the top 10 finishers in the 400-IM with
Martin Melinder (Upplands Vasby, Sweden/) finishing seventh in 4:06 flat and
Chris Sprenger (Shawnee, KS/Mill Valley) taking 10
th in 4:10.47.
The Miners' 800-yard freestyle relay team consisting of
Aidan Walters (Olathe, KS/Olathe East),
Connor Wiedemeier (West Monroe, LA/West Monroe),
Marcelo Busch (Sao Centrano Do Sui-Sp, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) and Melinder came in sixth overall with a time of 6:52.34.
S&T also had three in the top 10 in the 100-yard backstroke, as
Mark Cavanaugh (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista) came in eighth in 49.81 seconds and Walters took 10
th in 50.96. Gabe Porter also finished in the top 15 in the 100-back with a 13
th place showing in 52.31 seconds, as did
Tristan Dawson (Brainerd, MN/Brainerd) with his 15
th place effort in 52.63.
Clancy also headed S&T's 200-yard medley relay team that placed ninth along with
Jordan Christensen (Coralville, IA/Iowa West),
Nate Baxter (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) and Wiedemeier, as that quartet posted a time of 1:31.19.
Baxter finished 11
th in the 100-yard butterfly in 49.75 seconds, while
Nolan Fergus (Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy) was 14
th in 50.61 seconds and
Greg Dreisewerd (Ellisville, MO/MICDS) finished 16
th in 51.25.
Daniel Matlock (Peoria, IL/Richwoods) had an 11
th place showing of his own in the 400-IM in 4:13.30, just ahead of
Fletcher Smith's (Olathe, KS/Olathe South) mark of 4:13.40. Wiedemeier had a 12
th place showing in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:41.71, while Christensen was 13
th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.97 seconds and
Jay Mercer (Kansas City, MO/Whitefield Academy) was 14
th in 57.56.
Over the course of the day, S&T swimmers recorded 30 seasonal bests in the seven events that were contested. The meet concludes Friday.
