S&T to square off with Maryville Sunday in GLVC Tournament opener

10/26/2022 2:00:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will make its first appearance in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament since 2017 on Sunday, as the Miners travel to St. Louis for a matchup against regular season champion Maryville at 2 p.m.

Admission for Sunday's contest on the Maryville campus will be $10, with children under the age of five being admitted free.

The Miners, 5-7-4 overall and 4-4-4 in the GLVC, earned their spot in the tournament field after knocking off Indianapolis 3-2 Sunday at the S&T Soccer Field to finish in a tie for seventh place in the final standings (Truman State got the seventh seed over S&T due to its win over the Miners in September).  S&T will be making its first appearance in the event since 2017 when it reached the semifinal round and beat the top seed in that tournament to do so.

Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) scored twice for the Miners in Sunday's win and enters the week as the team's leading scorer with eight goals and four assists for 20 points; he is currently tied for the conference lead in goals and leads the league in points.  Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) scored his seventh goal of the season against Lewis on Friday and had 14 points, while Jimmy Sanchez (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central) has two goals and shares the team lead in assists with four with Jorgensen and Caden Archer (St. Louis, MO/Vianney).

Goalkeeper Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) has played all but 56 minutes in goal for the Miners this season, owning a 2.34 goals against average with 54 saves in 1,383 minutes.  He made six saves in the net in the win on Sunday.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT:  Maryville clinched the top seed for the tournament after playing to a 1-1 tie with McKendree on Friday, putting the 24th-ranked Saints at 9-4-3 overall and 8-1-3 in GLVC play this season.  The Saints have gone 2-0-2 since suffering a loss at Drury on Oct. 7, but one of those wins was a 7-1 victory over the Miners on Oct. 16 in St. Louis.

Maryville is one of the top defensive teams in the GLVC, holding a 0.75 goals against average as a team that ranks second in the conference and 18th in NCAA Division II.  Albert Escuin has seen the bulk of the playing time in goal and has a 0.58 goals against mark with 18 saves in 1,092 minutes.

The Saints are one of the most balanced offensive teams in the conference, with two five-goal scorers in Victor DeGiorgio and Tim Smith.  Those two, along with Cedric Sengl, have 13 points apiece as Maryville had had 13 different players score goals this season.

Smith scored twice for the Saints in the Oct. 16 win over the Miners as Maryville ran out to a 5-0 lead in the first half and held S&T to two shots in the contest.  Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central) had the goal for S&T early in the second half.
