ELSAH, Ill. – Missouri S&T's
Mitch Fairless (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) made an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in his winning performance Friday in the high jump on the first day of competition at the Principia Relays, where the men's team came away with three event victories.
Fairless cleared 6-9¾ to capture the competition as he was perfect on his first four attempts in the high jump. After clearing the winning height, he missed on all three tries at 6-11 as he attempted to break the school's indoor record in the event.
Missouri S&T's distance medley relay team of
Andrew Lofgren (Chesterfield, MO/Parkway West),
Michael Pate (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette),
Lucas Rackers (Florissant, MO/St. Louis University HS) and
Hayes Pateidl (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley West) also took first with a time of 10:22.38 that won the race by more than 19 seconds. The third win came from
Joshua Nunn (Independence, MO/Truman) in the 5,000-meters in 15:44.13, one of three events where the Miners had several finishers among the top eight.
Evan Stephens (Jackson, MO/Jackson) took second in the 5,000-meters in 16:06.12, while
Spencer Teske (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) had a time of 16:42.78 to take fourth,
Jorge Cantu (Cypress, TX/Bridgeland) finished sixth in 16:44.95 to edge teammate
Samuel Patterson's (Cameron, NC/Union Pines) seventh place time of 16:45.07.
The Miners had four of the top seven finishers in the long jump, led by
Luke Allen's (Jefferson City, MO/Calvary Lutheran) second place finish with a leap of 21-10¾.
Tristan Jones (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro) finished third at 20-4¼, while
Noah Richardson (Hillsboro, MO/Grandview) was fifth with a mark of 19-11 and
Jake Anderson (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) placed seventh at 19-4.
S&T also had four of the top eight in the weight throw, with
Jacob Luebbert (Warsaw, MO/Warsaw) making a slight improvement on his NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark as he finished second at 60-3.
Nathan Swadley (Willard, MO/Willard) finished fourth at 55-5, while
Tyler Marchert (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln-Way East) took sixth at 43-11 and
Matthew Hoffman (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) finished eighth at 41-7.
Joseph Nickell (Nixa, MO/Nixa) had a second place finish in the pole vault as he cleared 14-11, while
Aaron Toben (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) finished fifth in the 200-meters in 22.84 seconds.
Daniel McMurran (St. Louis, MO/St. Louis University HS) was sixth in the pole vault at 5-10¾ and Samuel Schmidt placed eighth in the 200-meters in 23.25 seconds.
Schmidt made Saturday's finals in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.01 seconds in the preliminaries, as did
Kyle Burke (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield) in the 60-meter hurdles with his time of 8.53 seconds.
The women's performance Friday were highlighted by second place finishes by
Maya Washington (St. Louis, MO/Homeschooled) in the 200-meters with a time of 26.95 seconds,
Danielle Wilson (Mount Vernon, MO/Mount Vernon) in the long jump with a mark of 16-9¾,
Jessica Rhoads (Holts Summit, MO/Jefferson City) in the weight throw with a school record mark of 51-1 and
Hope Strausbaugh (Rogersville, MO/Logan-Rogersville) in the 5,000-meters with a time of 23:42.60.
Annmarie Tyson (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy) came in fourth in the long jump at 16-9¼ as did
Sydney Stephens (Plattsburg, MO/Plattsburg) in the weight throw at 47-3, while eighth place finishes came from
Keaton Painter (Morrisville, MO/Marion C. Early) in the long jump with a leap of 15-4 and
Brittany Moore (Fairfax, VA/Zama American) in the weight throw at 42-feet.
In the women's preliminaries Friday, Washington and Wilson qualified for Saturday's final in the 60-meter dash. Washington had a time of 8.05 seconds in her heat and Wilson ran an 8.21 to make the final.
The meet will wrap up on Saturday afternoon.
