ELSAH, Ill. – In their final tune-up races prior to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships, Missouri S&T's cross country teams both had top-three finishes as teams and between the squads had five individuals finish among the top 10 on an individual basis at the Border War Championship Friday afternoon at Principia College.
The S&T men's team was edged out by Drury for first despite having two of the top three finishers, while the women's team finished third in the standings in its race.
Hayes Patiedl was the top performer for S&T on the men's side as he finished third with a time of 26:14.72 in the eight-kilometer race, just ahead of teammate
Andrew Lofgren's (Chesterfield, MO/Parkway West) fourth place finish in 26:19.24. The Miners' third top-10 finisher was
Lucas Rackers (Florissant, MO/St. Louis University HS), who placed ninth in 26:42.38.
Missouri S&T also got a 19
th place finish out of
Spencer Teske (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) in 27:52.55 and a 21
st place showing by
Joshua Nunn (Independence, MO/Truman) in 28:05.15 to round out its top five scorers. The next two Miners across the line were
Joshua Patterson (Cameron, NC/Union Pines) in 28:22.73 and
Adam Perry (Farmington, MO/Farmington) in 28:43.39 in the 94-runner event.
Lindenwood's Louis Moreau captured the men's race in 25:29.26, but Drury took the team title as it had the three finishers right behind Lofgren and ended up with a final total of 49 points to S&T's 56. Lindenwood was a close third with 58.
Emma Puetz (Rolla, MO/Rolla) had the women's top finish for the fourth time in as many meets this season, posting a five-kilometer time of 19:48.85 to end up in sixth place.
Emily Griesenauer (Wentzville, MO/Holt) finished immediately behind Puetz in seventh in 19:53.33, while
Grace Giesler (Owasso, OK/Owasso) and
Clare Holmes (Camdenton, MO/Camdenton) both finished among the top 15 as well.
Giesler placed 13
th in a time of 20:28.36 and Holmes was 14
th in 20:29.45 as S&T was one of just two teams in the meet with its top four runners among the top 15. The Miners' fifth scorer was
Lauren Hirsch (St. Peters, MO/Fort Zumwalt South) in 21
st place with a time of 21:18.92, while the next two to cross the finish line were
Krista Hilmas (Rolla, MO/Rolla) in 21:43.25 and
Hope Strausbaugh (Rogersville, MO/Logan-Rogersville) in 21:44.53.
Lindenwood, who had its top five runners all among the top 12 that included race winner Najwa Chouati, took the team title with 34 points. Drury had 60 points as did the Miners, but the Panthers had higher finishers in three of the five scoring positions to edge S&T for second in the race that consisted of 63 runners.
The GLVC Championships will take place in Romeoville, Ill., on Oct. 23.
