GENEVA, Ohio – Missouri S&T opened competition Wednesday at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships with four scoring performances and two school records, including a win in the consolation final of the 200-yard medley relay to put it in ninth place in the team standings.
S&T's team of
Mark Cavanaugh (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista),
Marco Flores (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/SERAN Private Bilingual School),
Colten Becker (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) and
Chris Betts (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch) posted a school record time of 1:27.40 to take ninth place overall in the event, edging Wingate by 0.32 seconds. Flores posted a split of 23.64 in the breaststroke leg of the race – the fastest split in either the championship or consolation final in the breaststroke – while Betts had a freestyle leg of 19.76 to give the Miners the victory that broke the prior school record by close to a second.
The other school record on the opening night of the meet came from
Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) in the 200-yard individual medley, who broke his own record with a time of 1:47.99 that put him in 10
th place. The Miners had two finishers among the top 15 in the 1,000-yard freestyle as well, with
Alex Graham (Parker, TX/Homeschooled) finishing in ninth place in a time of 9:10.44 and
Tim Samuelsen (Stavanger, Norway/St. Svithun VGS) coming in 15
th place with his mark of 9:16.45.
Aaron Taske (Fairfield, OH/Saint Xavier) competed in the 1,000-freestyle and finished 17
th with a time of 9:17.95, while Flores had a time of 20.42 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle.
S&T scored 36 points on the opening day of the meet, as it trails Fresno Pacific by five points and has five teams within six points of it heading into Thursday's competition. Huffman will compete in the 400-yard individual medley and the Miners will have two relay teams in action on day two.
The national meet continues through Saturday.
