ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T got complete game performances from both of its starting pitchers Saturday afternoon as it swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader from Truman State at the S&T Ballpark, winning by scores of 11-1 and 5-0.
Luke Marcheschi (Bloomington, IL/Central Catholic) improved to 5-0 on the season as the Miners took the opener in seven innings due to the 10-run rule, then
Dalton Erger (Imperial, MO/Seckman) blanked the Bulldogs on five hits in the nightcap to complete the sweep as S&T improved to 11-5 overall and 4-1 in the GLVC.
After Marcheschi set Truman (1-12, 1-4 GLVC) down in the order in the first, the Miners gave him five runs to work with in the bottom half of the first. The Miners' first started with
Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing) being hit by a pitch, then
Matt Gruse (Neenah, WI/Neenah) reached on an error with one out.
Tim Lira (Granger, IN/Penn) followed with an opposite field single that scored Burk with the first run of the inning, then Gruse came across the plate following a hit by
Keegan Baxmeyer (Waterloo, IL/Freeburg).
With two outs,
Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville) singled in Lira, then
Drew Aldana (El Paso, TX/JM Hanks) followed with a double down the right field line to bring home Baxmeyer and Reid to complete the five-run first.
S&T added runs in the second on an RBI single by Gruse and in the third when Burk drove in Reid before the Bulldogs got their only run in the fourth on a two-out RBI hit by Brian Edell.
The Miners closed out the contest by scoring four more runs in the seventh, which began when
Matt Knickerbocker (Bayfield, CO/Bayfield) reached on an error. That was followed by hits by Reid and Aldana, the latter of which scored Knickerbocker, before a one-out single by Burk brought in Reid.
Jason Volkmann (Liberty, MO/Liberty) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Gruse singled into left center to score the final two runs to bring the game to an end.
The Miners outhit Truman 15-5 in the opener, with Baxmeyer and Reid getting three hits apiece. Gruse and Aldana each drove in three in support of Marcheschi, who fanned five in his outing which included a nine-pitch, three-strikeout fifth inning.
S&T also jumped out to a lead in the first inning of game two as Burk drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a two-out RBI double by Knickerbocker, then let Erger take care of matters for the remainder of the afternoon as he allowed only five hits and struck out eight. Only three Truman runners got as far as second base in the nightcap.
After scoring the initial run, the Miners were held off the scoreboard until the fifth when they tallied three unearned runs.
Gruse reached on a two-base error to begin the inning on a dropped fly ball, then scored on Knickerbocker's one-out single before another error opened the door for two additional runs in the frame.
Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud) followed the second error with a run-scoring double, then
Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly.
S&T tacked on an additional run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Gruse.
The Miners had a 10-5 advantage in hits in game two, as Knickerbocker and Bracken each had three hits.
Missouri S&T and Truman will complete their weekend series with a single game Sunday starting at noon.
