Miners complete sweep of Bulldogs with Sunday victory

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T was able to take advantage of a couple of key mistakes by Truman State Sunday afternoon and in turn, completed a sweep of the Great Lakes Valley Conference three-game series with a 7-2 victory.

The Miners scored four unearned runs in the contest, one in the second when the Miners took the lead in the game and three more with two outs in the fourth as they improved to 12-5 overall and 5-1 in the GLVC with their fifth straight victory.

S&T broke the scoreless tie in the second when Keegan Baxmeyer (Waterloo, IL/Freeburg) reached on an error to begin the inning and later scored on a ground out by Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo)Brady Wildschuetz (Foristell, MO/Francis Howell), who singled after the error, scored moments later on a hit by Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville).

In the fourth, the Miners had runners at first and third with two outs when Truman starter Mason Hutch struck out Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing), but the third strike was dropped and catcher Brian Edell's throw to first to complete the strikeout was low and wide of first base.  That error allowed Wildschuetz to score from third and Reid – who was running on the pitch – to score all the way from first to make it 4-0.

Burk ended up at second on the play and came in to score on Jason Volkmann's (Liberty, MO/Liberty) opposite field single.

The Miners tacked on another run in the fifth when Baxmeyer tripled with one out and scored on a hit by Wildschuetz.

Truman (1-13, 1-5 GLVC) got on the scoreboard by scoring twice in the eighth against the Miner bullpen, but Lira belted his third home run of the season in the bottom half of the inning to provide S&T some insurance.  The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the ninth to get the tying run to the on-deck circle, but Stuart Martin (Ajax, ON/Ajax) came in and struck out Steven Bradbury to end the game.

The Miners, who outscored the Bulldogs 23-3 in the three-game sweep, outhit Truman 12-6.  Blaine Dunbar (West Plains, MO/West Plains), one of six hurlers used by S&T Sunday, picked up the win in relief of starter Brenden Garza (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt South) as he retired all five hitters he faced.

Missouri S&T continues its homestand Wednesday when they host Maryville in an noon GLVC doubleheader at the S&T Ballpark.
