Miners play to a split with Saints in mid-week GLVC twinbill

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T extended its season-long winning streak to six games when it defeated Maryville 11-1 in the first game of Wednesday's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at the S&T Ballpark, but the Saints turned the tables on the Miners in game two with a 14-4 win to gain a split of the twinbill.

S&T (13-6, 6-2 GLVC) broke open a tight opening game with a two-run fifth inning that was followed by a six-run sixth.  The Miners initially took the lead in the second when Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud) led off the inning with a single and later scored on Cameron Burk's (Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing) two-out single, but Maryville (9-11, 6-2 GLVC) tied the contest in the third on Louis Niemerg's RBI double.

In the fifth, the Miners got a one-out singles from Jason Volkmann (Liberty, MO/Liberty) and Matt Gruse (Neenah, WI/Neenah), then with two outs, Matt Knickerbocker (Bayfield, CO/Bayfield) singled into center to drive in Volkmann with the go-ahead run.  Knickerbocker's hit was followed by an infield single by Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud) that scored Gruse to extend the S&T lead to 3-1.

The Miners then busted the game open in the sixth, scoring the first run on a wild pitch and the second on a bases loaded single by Gruse that preceded a grand slam by Tim Lira (Granger, IN/Penn) to cap the six-run outburst.

S&T scored again in the seventh and ended the game due to the 10-run rule in the eighth on a Drew Aldana (El Paso, TX/JM Hanks) RBI single, giving starting pitcher Chasen Anderson (Moscow Mills, MO/Troy Buchanan) his first collegiate win.  Anderson allowed just one run and scattered seven hits over the first five innings.

The Miners outhit Maryville 13-8 in game one, with five different Miners getting two hits apiece.

Game two, however, was all Maryville from the start as the Saints got two-run homers from Daniel Covert in the first and Austin Tapella in the second before adding a run in the  third and five unearned runs – thanks to four S&T errors in the inning – to take a 10-0 lead after four innings.

The Miners were held without a hit in the nightcap until Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville) singled with two outs in the fifth, then got on the scoreboard in the sixth when Burk doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.  S&T added two more in the sixth when Gruse crossed the plate after Knickerbocker reached on an error and Bracken reached on an infield hit to score Lira.

Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo) hit his first home run as a Miner in the seventh, but Maryville scored four times in the eighth to bring about the final margin.

The Saints had an 11-5 advantage in hits in the second game, as Matthew Lamb (Doniphan, NE/Grand Island) took the loss on the mound for S&T.

The Miners will wrap up their nine-game homestand this weekend when they host Lewis in a three-game series at the S&T Ballpark.  The teams are scheduled to play a noon doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.  S&T will then begin a road swing that starts with a single game at Maryville next Tuesday to wrap up the season series with the Saints.
