ROLLA, MO- The Miner women's basketball team will conclude their regular season schedule this weekend when they play host to the Cardinals of William Jewell on Thursday night and the Hawks of Rockhurst University on Saturday's Senior Day celebration.
S&T is currently on a four-game losing skid that was extended last Saturday when Missouri-St. Louis escaped two double-digit comeback efforts from the Miners.
After
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) completed a three-point play, the Miners found themselves down by five with 2:14 remaining in the game. S&T kept it close, but they were not able to catch the Tritons as they downed seven free-throws in the final minute of the game to take the 70-61 win.
The Miners are currently led by
Alex Kerr's (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) 11.8 points per game along with
Maddie Raley's (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) 11.3 points per contest.
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) isn't too far behind them with just over nine points per game while leading the team with 8.9 rebounds and a league leading 2.7 blocks per game.
As a team, the Miners are shooting just over 42% from the field and have the 2
nd best three-point FG percentage at 35.7%. They are holding their opponents to 40% from the field and rank in the top-5 in the league in assists per game, blocked shots per game, fewest fouls per game, defensive and total rebounds per game, and assists-turnover ratio.
About William Jewell:
The Cardinals (13-11, 7-9 GLVC) are coming off a 25-point deficit to Rockhurst on their Senior Day. Rockhurst came out hot, outscoring William Jewell 41-13 in the opening 20 minutes. That dominating lead and holding the Cardinals to just 30% shooting from the field would give them the 88-63 win.
The Cardinals are led by Antoinette Mussorici and her 14.9 points per game (ranked 6th in the GLVC).Kiara Bradley is right behind her with 13.6 points per contest and sits as the 11th top-ranking scorer in the league. Stewart and Sydney Offield runs the boards for the Cardinals, averaging 5.7 and 5.2 rebounds per game, respectively.
As a team, William Jewell sits right behind S&T with 67.7 points per game and has a scoring margin of 3.1 which is 5th best in the GLVC. They are also ranked 3rd for their 75% free-throw percentage, 3rd with 9.4 steals per game, 3rd with 363 free-throws made, and 4th with an average of 17.46 turnovers forced per game.
The Miners lead the all-time series against William Jewell 11-8, but haven't seen a win over the Cardinals came to Gibson Arena in January of 2018. In last year's win,
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern),
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia),
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic), and
Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) combined for 50 of the team's 64 points and were able to just slip by the Cardinals on made free-throws from Kabetske.
The last time the two teams met,
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) came off the bench for the Miners to score a team-high 16 points. But, it would not be enough to get by William Jewell as the Cardinals held a 42-25 lead heading into halftime. They built off that lead and were able to hold on for the 78-63 win.
About Rockhurst:
The Hawks (9-15, 5-11 GLVC) are coming off a big win over William Jewell where they held the Cardinals to just 13 first-half points in Liberty. Madeline Ronshausen led the charge for Rockhurst and had a game-high 26 points while going 9-12 from the free-throw line. Despite the Cardinals scoring 50 points in the second half of the game, RU was able to hold on for the 25-point victory.
The Hawks are led by Madeline Ronshausen, who is 3
rd in the league with 18.8 points per game. The junior is also ranked in the top-five in the GLVC in field-goal percentage, free-throw percentage, and three-point FG percentage. Ronshausen also leads the team with 4.0 rebounds per game and 67 assists, and is second on the team with 25 steals.
As a team, the Hawks are shooting just over 42% from the field and leading the GLVC with 7.8 three-pointers made per game. They have committed the 4
th fewest turnovers in the league and force their opponents into 14 turnovers per game.
The Miners have had great success over Rockhurst in the past, leading the all-time series over the Hawks 22-8. S&T has taken the last three match-ups between the schools with the last win coming earlier this season where
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) played a key factor in the Miners win; she picked up a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds while blocking a career high six shots.
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township),
Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown),
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic), and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) all also scored in double-digits to take the 77-75 win and collect the team's first GLVC win of the season.
