ROLLA, MO-The Miner's return home this week to face-off against fellow Missouri GLVC rivals Truman State on Thursday and Quincy on Saturday.
Â
Over the weekend, S&T made the trip to Southern Indiana and Bellarmine University where they ran into defensive problems at both schools.
Â
On Thursday night, Missouri S&T found themselves with a 17-16 lead going into the second quarter of the game. But, Southern Indiana combined for 43 points between the second and third quarters while keep the Miners at bay. The commanding 23-point lead was too much for the Miners to make a comeback and the Screaming Eagles went on to win 76-61.
Â
Saturday did not look much better for the Miners. Bellarmine took a 50-26 lead at halftime after shooting 55% from the field.
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) would go on a frenzy, scoring 19 of her game-high 25 points in the second half. After getting down by as much as 29, the Miner's chipped away at the lead and got within nine of the Knights late in the fourth quarter. But, the lead proved to be too much as S&T dropped their second game of the weekend 85-75.
Â
The Miners are led by
Alex Kerr's (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) 11.8 points per game with
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) close behind her with 11.3.
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) continues to be consistent for S&T as she posts 9.4 points per game and brings down a team high 9.1 rebounds per game. She also leads the league with her 2.81 blocks per game and 45 blocks for the season.
Â
About Truman State:
Â
The Bulldogs (17-3, 8-2 GLVC) are coming off wins over Illinois Springfield and McKendree University that moved them into 3
rdplace in the conference standings.
Â
After nearly getting by Illinois Springfield on Thursday night, the Bulldogs downed the Bearcats by 20 and kept all McKendree scorers in single-digits. Allison Thomas and Maddie Re both came off the bench for Truman State to lead the offensive efforts while Re grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in the 76-56 win.
Â
The Bulldogs are led by Brooke Bailey and Rachel Edmundson, who are both averaging just over 11 points per game. Sloane Totta comes in right behind them at 10.3 points per game while Maddie Re leads the team with 8.2 rebounds. Edmundson currently sits 4
thin the league for her 36.4% from three-point range and 3
rdwith her 44 made three-pointers this season.
Â
Truman State leads the all-time series against the Miners, winning the last six meetings between the two. The last S&T win over the Bulldogs came more than a decade ago when they just barely snuck past Truman State for the 57-55 win in the 2006-2007 season.Â
Â
The last time the two teams met, Truman State took a commanding 23-10 lead after the opening quarter. They would outscore the Miners 40-25 in the following two quarters to secure their 77-50 win.
About Quincy:
Â
The Hawks (5-14, 3-7 GLVC) are coming off two GLVC losses to McKendree and Illinois Springfield.
Â
After McKendree's defense held Quincy to just 12 first half points on Thursday night, Illinois Springfield would come in and hold the Hawks to just seven points in the opening quarter. Despite Quincy playing even with the Prairie Stars for the reminder of the game, the 12 points deficit from the first quarter would be all Illinois Springfield needed to defeat the Hawks 77-65.
Â
The Hawks are led by Maddie Spagnola and Michaela Gronewold who are averaging 13.7 and 11.2 points per game, respectively, while Grace Schraufnagel is grabbing a team-high 5.2 rebounds. As a team, the Hawks are shooting 37.9% from the field and 33.1% from the three-point line.Â
Â
The Miners lead the all-time series 18-17 with four of the last five match-ups going in favor of the Hawks. The last win came in 2017 when
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern), then a freshman, came off the bench to score a game-high 16 points and went 4-4 from long range to help S&T defeat Quincy 72-59.
Â
When the two teams met last season, Quincy held the Miners to just 15 first half points. Despite an explosive third quarter for S&T, Quincy was able to hold on to the 84-67 win.
