Miners swept by Cardinals to open weekend series

ROLLA, Mo. – William Jewell  used some big innings early in each game of Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Missouri S&T and came away with a sweep of the twinbill by identical 9-2 scores.

The Cardinals (16-12, 6-4 GLVC) used a four-run fourth inning to break open the first game of the doubleheader, then took overcame an early S&T (12-15, 4-6 GLVC) lead in game two with a four-run outburst in the third inning and put another four on the scoreboard two innings later to break the nightcap open.

Playing in temperatures that hovered near the freezing mark at the start of game one, the Cardinals jumped on top in the opening inning when Nate Pecota singled, stole second and went to third on a throwing error on the play, then crossed the plate on Christian Chalabi's ground out.

William Jewell added to its lead with a run in the third, then broke loose for four in the fourth with the big blows coming on a two-run double by Ben Paulter and a two-run single that followed by Pecota.  The Cardinals also scored a single run in the fifth and two more in the seventh before the Miners got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of that inning.

In the seventh, Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) opened the inning with a triple – a hit that broke the Missouri S&T career record for triples as it was the 14th as a Miner – and scored on Nathan Volkmann (Liberty, MO/Liberty)'s ground out.  Later in the inning, Matt Gruse (Neenah, WI/Neenah) drove in Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud) with a hit after he had reached with a hit and moved ahead on a wild pitch.

The Cardinals outhit the Miners 14-11, as Swindle, Connor Forsythe and Jason Volkmann (Liberty, MO/Liberty) all had two hits apiece.  Starting pitcher Trent Green (Perryville, MO/Perryville) took the loss for S&T.

The Miners took the initial lead in the second inning of the nightcap when J. Volkmann drove in Justus Nelson (Plymouth, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong) – right after S&T had a run taken off the scoreboard as Bracken left third too early on Jack DeGarmo (Liberty, MO/Liberty North)'s fly ball – but the Cardinals answered back with four in its half of the third as its first four hitters reached base and eventually came around to score.

Jewell tied the game on a successful double steal, then moved into the lead on a run-scoring double off the bat of Chase Redick.  The Cardinals would score four more in the fifth and another in the sixth before the Miners got their second run of the contest when Nelson led off the bottom of the seventh with his first home run as a Miner.

Nelson had two of the Miners' six hits in game two, as S&T was outhit 13-6.  Anthony Garza (Belleviille, IL/Belleville East), who was knocked out of the game during the course of Jewell's four-run fifth, took the loss for S&T.

The Miners and Cardinals are scheduled to wrap up their weekend series with a doubleheader Sunday that will begin at noon.
