GREENSBORO, N.C. – Missouri S&T's
Tim Samuelsen (Stavanger, Norway/St. Svithun VGS) captured his second national championship Saturday night at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, as he tacked on a title in the 1,650-yard freestyle to the one he won earlier in the week in the 1,000-freestyle.
Samuelsen, who entered the meet with the best time this season in the 1,650-freestyle, posted a time of 15:08.53 to take the title by better than seven seconds over Nova Southeastern's Franco Lupoli. In the process, Samuelsen became the first Miner to capture two national titles on an individual basis and fifth Miner to be part of two national performances at the same national meet.
In 2002, Dave Belleville, Bran Olson, Sean O'Donnell and Mike Lach won national titles as part of the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams. The national title won by Samuelsen is the sixth for Missouri S&T, as the Miners also won a title in the 200-freestyle relay in 2001 and Zlatan Hamzic was national champion in 2009 in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Unlike Wednesday's race, when he took the lead past the midway point of the race, Samuelsen moved into the lead in the first 300 yards and built on it over the course of the race as he also set a new school record in the event.
Also on Saturday, S&T's 400-yard freestyle relay team of
Eirik Nielsen (Stathelle, Norway/Toppidrettsgynmaset),
Morgan Meyer (Ruston, LA/Ruston),
Chris Betts (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch) and
Kevin McPherson (Oakdale, MN/Tartan) finished eighth in the finals with a time of 2:58.47, while Meyer also posted a time of 44.80 seconds in the preliminary round of the 100-yard freestyle.
The Miners finished the 2018 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships in 13
th place overall with a total of 122 points, improving one spot in the team standings from a year ago.
