ROLLA, Mo. – Continuing to work around a rainy February, Missouri S&T will get back on the diamond on Sunday and Monday as it will take part in the Dunn Hospitality Classic at the University of Southern Indiana.
The event was scheduled to take place Friday and Saturday, but the wet weather in the Midwest forced adjustments in the schedule and as a result, the Miners will play once on Sunday night and then play two more on Monday against teams from the NCAA Division II Midwest Region.
S&T will open play Sunday against Grand Valley State from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 7 p.m. The Lakers, who were picked to finish third in the GLIAC this season, are currently 0-2 on the season after dropping both ends of a doubleheader Sunday at Ohio Dominican.
On Monday, the Miners will take on Hillsdale in the first game of the day at 11 a.m. The Chargers, who were also a third place pick in their conference, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, split a four-game series with Saginaw Valley State played on Sunday and Monday in Tennessee.
S&T's final game of the weekend will be against a team from the Great Lakes Valley Conference as it faces GLVC East Division favorite and tournament host Southern Indiana at 5 p.m. The Screaming Eagles have lost the only game they have played thus far on the season, losing to top-ranked Delta State in its season opener on Saturday.
Over the Miners' first three games of the 2018 campaign, the Miner pitching staff has held its opponents to a .217 batting average, thanks in large part to a combined two-hit shutout by
Dalton Erger (Imperial, MO/Seckman) and
Luke Marcheschi (Bloomington, IL/Central Catholic) in last Wednesday's 2-0 win over Missouri Southern. Erger, who threw the first seven innings and fanned a career-high seven in that appearance, was named as the GLVC's pitcher of the week for his efforts.
Shortstop Cameron Buck has batted .556 over the first three contests, while
Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) has hit .444 and
Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville) is over the .300 mark at .308 on the year.
